I like it. I think it's catchy.

Hey, anything has to be better than GameCube 2....

is it only in the UK that Wii means wee?

They really havent thought this through, or they just didn't consider the UK, as usual...

This is true.

But I'm so sick of childish, insecure fanboys whinging about it! It doesn't take a rocket-scientist to point out the potential problems with the name, yet, the effect of the name so far, as far as i can see, is revealing who are the people that buy computer games for the image - the insecure ones; also who thought they were Nintendo fans but aren't really.

To be quite honest, I'm not that bothered, and I think it's brave and unique - because I'd always thought computer games were more important than going to the toilet. "XBox 360" is nonsense, and "Playstation 3" is unimaginitive, so why not just have a console with a silly name? After all, it's only a name.

I must admit the logo and video look slick but no matter how much PR bulls**t they try to sell the idea with, this console is forever going to have the piss taken out of the name. Excuse the pun ;)

Wii in inself isn't that bad, it's just that it's pronounced Wee!!

Oh well, us Nintendo fans have never had it easy so let's just learn to love it and bring on the games! Personally, I can't wait for Super Wii Fighter, where you have to use the controller to see how far you can get it up the wall!

On the plus side, "Nintendo Wii" rhymes with "David Bowie."

Okay, I'm calm NOW!

Yeah, it's unusual and it's creative and it'll do well in Japan.

But in Europe and the USA? Would you be happy to go into a shop and ask for a Wii? Even if it meant "weee!"? Is this a platform which will have a variety of interesting games?

Time will tell, but for me Nintendo has just proved two things:
It will always be for kids and kiddy games.
It never thinks internationally, only about its home turf.

The second point will doom Nintendo to failure.

In France, it will be like, "want to play my Wii?"
"Wait a minute, I haven't said I would, yet!"

Seriously I almost don't want one now, almost. I will still get one because it doesn't change the console but I think that Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot with this one, because its a stupid name and I think that it will work against them. Choosing a noncompetitive name is definately a good call but "Wii" is a nonentity. They wanted casual appeal they needed something catchy and they needed something that says game console too. I think "Nintendo GO!" would have been the better choice. Honestly I blame Nintendo's hang up on the MAC advertising campaigns to be the reason for this name and I think the Name and the marketing is going to hurt its chances at gaining market share.

I love it...they are definitely following the Mac style and naming convention... Its different and very unique.
One thing you have to admit...love it or hate it... the buzz on this system is crazy.

"One Nintendo WHiiiiiiiiieeeeeee please..." I could see myself asking this at the counter of the nearby gameshop.

That said... the name is indeed very strange, will cause a lot of namejokes (filtering with immediate effect people with any intellect at all, which is always handy), then again, ipod sounds strange too, it could become a cultname and drive the community feeling up. We are the gamers that play...wiiieee, wiiieeee...

Seriously...I praise nintendo for doing not giving it a conventional name, but I just cant see myself saying "I am playing wii", or "lets go play wii". Just doesnt sound the same as I am playing nintendo or lets go play nintendo or any other console name.

I think that is a weak name especially considering the direct connotation. Very creative, but also very shortsided.

Maybe it will grow on me...i just still cant see myself saying "come over here and we can play wii".

So it's been 4 hours since I found out the new name. For the first half hour I felt a deep sadness and doubted the concept of revolution but after reflection I am convinced that it is a good brand name for a revolutionary nintendo games console. Here's why:

1. It's fun if you say "Weee!" enthusiastically. Espeially if you're young.
2. "Wii" is "Wifi" without the "f". Contextual and cool.
3. It's a new and usable name that is only 3 letters long. I wish I had thought of it.
4. "we" is a group word in english used by everyone when communicating with others. "Used to refer to people in general, including the speaker". Rarely is it used to describe urinating.
5. "oui" french for "yes". Positive.
6. "ii" is "good" in japanese. Positive again.
7. Pretend the title is actually very technical and more alpha-male by refering to it as the "Wireless Information Interface" as well as the obvious, down-a-slide, "Weee!". (this will only happen convincingly if eventually everyone actually has one of these at it is truly globally mass-market)

That'll do for now :)
