There was a mass shortage over here at Christmas too. Or was that just Newcastle?

It's funny, I've seen people playing DSes on the public transport up here (there was a guy playing Mario Kart on the Metro yesterday) but not one PSP, and yet that sold out as well. Hmm... could it be it's true they only get used in people's homes, á la Game Gear?

Interestingly it's completely different in the UK.

ChartTrack, via MCV, via Gamasutra say the following.

Nintendo DS having totalled 800,000 unit sales since its debut in March. Despite its delayed launch in September, the PSP has almost equaled this figure with 795,000

Note that ChartTrack figures are based on actual sales over the counter, not on ship-in figures.

I would have linked to MCV, but for some reason they have pulled the story from their site after having sent it out to their news flash email list!

So PSP sold 5,000 fewer units than DS in the UK in under half the time. It will be interesting to see how sales continue into 2006.

Problem with Chart Track is...they don't count in bundles in software and hardware rankings. And Since the Mario Kart DS and Nintendogs bundles have been repored to be very scarce... i think you can easily add up another 100 000 extra sold DS's.

Probably they dropped their piece because Nintendo and/or Sony complained. Nintendo complained because they didn't add in bundels or Sony complained because they don't want their sales numbers of the PSP going public (NPD numbers have been lacking PSP-sales very frequent)

Err, what? I was giving a comparison for people to go "ooh that's interesting" and "I wonder why the UK is so different to Japan?" maybe even "Those silly Brits and their graphics whore ways!"

As far as software and hardware sales go, Japan is the 3rd largest market after the US and EU, so why do people always talk about the JP hardware sales?

Well mostly because they are very easily available since Media Create publish them weekly.

Also Japan is the home country for two of the main hardware manufacturers.

But really, it's because people are interested - with the "Ooh that's interesting" comments and the like.

So, I'm sorry I so disturbed your world view by publishing actual facts that you didn't seem to find interesting, I will do it again.

And those sorts of overall figures are only interesting to those who want to say "DS roxxors, PSP suxxors!!!!!111!!1one!!1".

Anybody who has been following the sales of the DS and PSP will be able to tell you that worldwide the DS is out-selling the PSP by quite a large margin. That's not news. Neither is the increasing size of the gap between them.

What might be interesting, and start discussions, are instances where the PSP is selling very close to the DS or, as in this case, where the PSP seems to be out-selling the DS on a monthly average basis.

Don't worry, I haven't lost my rag. I'm not a fanboy or a mindless bigot who goes through the roof when I find out that somebody holds a different opinion to me.

I do worry though, when I post a piece of information that I thought people would find interesting and it's met by a response that amounts to "who cares, f**k off!"

Quick to accuse aren't you. why are the areas were psp is outselling the ds or even beating it interesting?!?!?!?! any1 with an ounce of common sense should be able to clearly deduce that the only reason for this, is that the regions were the above is occurring are littered with pritty picture, unimaginative graphic hungry whores!! not that there is anything wrong with likin some nice graphics!

I am not ramming the fact that the DS is outselling the PSP by a ratio of 2:1 around the world no no. As for you saying it's not news, thats laughable! think of David vs Goliath and u might understand were i am coming from!

I will keep this civilised and wont resort to being rude like some people. I'm not dismissing your comments as "who cares, f**k off". Implying this upsets me and saddens me deeply, the fact that you think people can be that nasty brings me to the conclusion your not at peace with the world. feel the love, we dont hate or criticise just put across our opinions, i was only expressing my opinion to you. but obviously you dont like other people offering their comments to you. so in future i will leave you well alone in case you cry about it.

It's interesting because the UK is at odds with pretty much the rest of the world, in regards to PSP/DS sales.

And this got me thinking. Is the UK the only territory (I won't use EU, as I've never lived outside UK) the only territory without a really strong Ninty following?

Nintendo's been big in Japan ever since the NES, especially the handhelds.

This is also the case in the US. The NES positively dwarfed the Master System, and I believe the SNES marginally outsold the MD (but not to such a vast extent). And recently, although GC sales were lower than both PS2 and XB, the handhelds are still doing amazingly well.

In the UK, I don't think Ninty's ever had the market to itself - the gameboys being the exception.

- The 8-bit generation was a pretty close match, with the UK adopting the MS with enthusiasm. The NES did similarly well. But, in fact I'd say the 80s belonged to the Speccy and C64.

- The MD and SNES were pretty even-stephens too. But, again, the Amiga and ST computers were also extremely popular - probably more so than the consoles.

- Then along came Playstation, and the rest have never caught up.

So (and to my conclusion), apart from the Gameboys, Ninty have never dominated the UK market, and perhaps the current figures of PSP/ DS sales shows this trend continuing.

Well, I'd say it was interesting due to the fact that the DS is out-selling the PSP everywhere else. Exceptions are more interesting than the general trend when the general trend is well known.

Given the domination that Nintendo holds over the hand-held market and how many other competitors have fallen by the wayside, I think you may have your characters mixed up there. Sony is David in this case and David isn't winning.

That sounds like a "who cares" message to me. Maybe the "f**k off" part of my response was a bit strong, but it's certainly a "who cares, tell me something I do know" message you gave out.

Quick to accuse aren't you? Have a look through some of my other postings here, I love a good discussion.

And you weren't giving your opinion, your reply to my initial post in this thread was a statement of fact couched in a question, followed by an implied instruction. Your next post was an attempt to re-state your reason for not caring, followed by a faintly insulting dismissal of the subject all together.

As for the "not at peace with the world. feel the love" bit above, I believe Cartman would refer to that as "tree hugging hippy s**t." I'm pretty happy with my position in life and certainly don't lash out at other people for fun. And if you don't believe that people can be nasty, can I ask what brand of cotton-wool your mother wrapped you up in as a child?

I have explained why it is happeneing though, its because the places were the PSP is outselling the DS is full of unimaginative graphic hungry whores!! Not interesting if u ask me

Again u have missed my point, i was talking about pure power and "wow" factor. As in every1 expected the PSP to whipe the floor with the DS and dont say they didnt because 99% of people did. Now that is not my opinion, that is fact!

every1 was

Like i sed i didnt mean it in an aggressive way wat so ever. i was just giving you my opinion. if u choose to read it as aggressive that is up to you.

so you are telling people if they are implyin opinion or not, very democratic there. tis was my opinion, might not have worded it the best but it was.
