Star Wars – New Game, toys, DVDs

Awesome new Lego Star Wars 2 trailer inside.

LucasArts has just opened up the Star Wars money cupboard again, promising fans not one, not two, but three new shiny Star Wars-related things this coming September.

Not only will you be able to play what is shaping up to be a contender for Game of 2006 – Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (click the links below to see trailer) – you will also be able to spaff your cash on loads of cool new Star Wars toys and - really for purists only this one - be able to watch the DVDs of the original versions of the three movies that introduced audiences to the Star Wars saga, meaning the digitally un-remastered ones which were shown in the cinema.

Quicktime (19.1MB)
Windows Media (14.1MB)

These ‘attractively priced’ individual two-disc DVD sets of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi will also inevitably include special bonus material as well as the original versions of the movies as seen in theatres in 1977, 1980 and 1983, respectively.

Aside from the questions which are being asked in the SPOnG office – why would you want to watch a movie that doesn’t look as good in Dolby 2.0 instead of an amazing looking one in glorious 5.1 surround sound? - what can they actually have left to chuck in as special bonus material? – we will of course be the first in line at our local outlet in September to buy these new Star Wars DVDs, toys and - most excitingly - the Traveller’s Tales-developed game.

Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. said: “We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we’re very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans.”

Shameless cash-ins aside, after watching the game trailer, SPOnG is extremely excited about playing LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy – the opportunity to mess with the original characters and mix them up to make, for example, a Yodarth, a See-Chewpio or a Princess Obi-Wan Kejawa is pure genius.

September 12 is Star Wars day – mark it on your calendar now.

What for serving the videos, or the site?

The site is moving to a new server, hanging off the phat backbone at docklands, plus we're working on re-engineering the archaic ASP behind the site to improve general performance.

The video is hosted out of a server in the US that, depending on your geolocation and time of day, varies between really fast and just "okay".

Well,

Your site has to be one of the slowest in respons i've come across lately, and downloading the quicktime, was hardly impressive either.

Generally, it takes spong about 5 times longer to load than any other site of the same magnetude. It usually bugs me, but now it was really slow. This is both at home and at work. Both connections are high speed internet. 20480 Kbps download and 1024 Kbps upload. Maybe the speed varies a bit from day/night time, but even so, it's still impressively slow.

I don't mean to offend, it's just voicing my concerns, as a loyal supporter of the site.
