SEGA has just fed us some more drips of hope for a brighter Sony handheld future. Sonic Rivals is a brand new Sonic game in development exclusively for PSP by Backbone Entertainment (the fellows responsible for, amongst other titles,
Death Jr - click for info here).
Sonic Rivals promises to mix up the swift pace of old-style Sonic with classic 2D gameplay in a 3D environment ‘for gamers on the go.’ Most gamers that SPOnG knows tend to be rather indolent – not the kind of people who we would ever describe as being ‘on the go’. But whatever, it’s a
new Sonic and we’d happily run a mile (well, slowly jog) to get our hands on it. Luckily, we won’t have to, as we’ll be seeing it when we visit SEGA at E3 in a mere seven days.
In the meantime, check out these first screens for a taster of what’s in store for Sonic. Backbone has built the game from the ground-up, and the engine allows gamers to rip through tracks in both single player and up to four players on the wireless multiplayer mode.
Since its fondly remembered debut on the SEGA Genesis way back in 1991, SEGA has shifted over 44 million Sonic The Hedgehog games, with the blue-hued speedfreak celebrating his 15th birthday this year. Happy birthday, Sonic! May you live long and prosper.
In Sonic Rivals, you can control any of four characters, each with a different unfolding storyline – including, of course, Sonic and Knuckles – racing against other players, plus rivals, including the evil Shadow.
The game also makes use of an extensive rewards system, based on collecting trading cards, allowing players to customise their favourite characters. So when you play wirelessly against mates, you can put trading cards on the line for even more multiplayer challenges.
In classic Sonic style, you’ll make use of boost moves and power-ups to trip, shove, and vault over each other to make it to the finishing line first. Whilst negotiating the wildly twisting 3D tracks at breakneck speeds, you will also have to watch out for that little creep, Dr. Eggman, and his hazardous traps and contraptions.
Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc, must really be getting pretty tired now, having to make these daily corporate quotes for the pre-E3 SEGA drip-feed of joy. Here, in full, is his latest on the newest Sonic incarnation: "Sonic Rivals brings back the classic 2D platform gameplay that started it all, and douses it with vibrant three-dimensional environments…In this heated rivalry, gamers are tested to prove not only who's the fastest but who has the best head-to-head gameplay strategy."
Sonic Rivals is due out this autumn on PSP. SPOnG will bring you our first impressions from E3 next week on all of SEGA's line-up, which currently includes Full Auto 2 (PS3), SEGA Rally (PS3, X360, PC), World Snooker Championship/Challenge 2007 (PS2, PS3, X360, PSP), Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (Wii) and Virtua Tennis 3 (PS3, X360).
