Red Octane has announced today that they will be unleashing Guitar Hero II at E3 next month. SPOnG did an air-guitar powerchord jump of joy upon hearing this news. Next to Nintendo’s doubtlessly awesome line-up of games, Guitar Hero 2 is now on the hotlist of must-play E3 titles.

In an IGN interview, Red Octane's John Tam revealed that developer Harmonix is adding an additional musical stream to each of the new tracks in the game – which means you will be able to select your instrument – from bass, rhythm guitar or lead guitar. So as well as going head-to-head in guitar battles with your mates, you will also be able to play together in your own band. Yes! The dream! Make it work online, and SPOnG may never have any valid reason for leaving the house ever again.

Tam also hints that more cool musical instrument peripherals could be thrown into the GH2 mix - including a bass guitar – plus, most importantly, he reveals that 40 of the 55 songs in the game will be tracks from major labels. SPOnG looks forward to rocking out to Led Zep (we hope!) and more in LA next month. Guitar Hero II is down for a pre-Xmas release over in the US.

In other Guitar Hero news, Red Octane, Harmonix and Capcom have teamed up with I Am 8-Bit to create an exclusive mod of the only axe-wielding game that matters for the art show’s opening, in which the theme for Mega Man by The Acro-Brats and the theme for Ikari Warriors by Artillery have been given the Guitar Hero treatment recorded by the in house Harmonix band.

If you happen to be around the Melrose Avenue area whilst over at E3 next month – getting cheap tattoos, skateboard equipment or dope-smoking paraphernalia along with SPOnG – then remember to check out the I Am 8-Bit show which actually opens today and is at Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight, 7020 Melrose Avenue.
