Point Blank Comes to DS

Shoot things with, erm, a mini stylus.

One of SPOnG's all-time favourite PlayStation peripherals has to be the Point Blank lightgun – one of those perfect peripherals/wacky game combinations that just seemed to appeal to all your non-gaming friends. Blasting away gnashing piranhas and fluffy ducks with a plastic gun has never been so much fun.

In fact, SPOnG can’t think of a peripheral which managed to convince even the hardest naysayers that games could be fun without all the confusing mucky-muck of traditional controllers. Perhaps Sega Bass Fishing, but we’ll carry on that argument till the cows come home.

And whilst that argument rages on, we have some quite surprising Point Blank news. Namco Bandai is doing a DS version, whereby you use your stylus to tap things on the screen, as opposed to using your gun to shoot them. In theory, we have to say, this sounds potentially very dull. Although, on paper and in theory, many of Wario Ware’s mini games also sound very dull.

The game is due out this summer. There is a four-difficulty-level Arcade Mode with 40 different touch-screen action sequences based on those from the arcade and PlayStation games, where you get to blast (tap) away clay pigeons, aliens, cardboard cut-outs and other zany targets.

There's also a wireless multiplayer mode, a high-score free-play and a couple of others, including ones called Brain Massage and called Games Museum. SPOnG’s hive-mind is boggling.
