Gossip: Revolution Final Name This Week

GDC to end painful speculation

From what SPOnG can tell, there is currently 86,793 blogs dedicated to wondering about Revolution. And from what we've read, 92.7% of everything they ever write about concerns whether the name of Nintendo's Revolution will remain Revolution, or whether it will be changed to something more appropriate. SPOnG would suggest that the fact Nintendo has repeatedly stated Revolution is strictly a codename renders 100% of these articles as useful as a JoWood press disc, but that's just us. We're kind of mean-spirited.

So what, we wonder, will armies of teenage boys with no girlfriends whose parents only bought them a GameCube (thus enslaving them into a lifetime of fanboy loneliness) do with their spare time after Thursday, when, at the 2006 Games Developers Conference in San Jose, Nintendo will announce the final name of its next console?

Well-placed pre-show chatter has it that Nintendo President Satoru Iwata will announce the final, retail name of Revolution on Thursday, ending the pain of us being emailed by various webmasters boasting new and brilliant headlines such as “Nintendo Revolution: Not Final Name!!!” and the equally thrilling “Nintendo Revolution: Final Name!!!”.

As to what Nintendo will call its increasingly delicious box of tricks is anyone's guess, though we hear from colleagues in Japan that a reference to the Famicom may well be on the cards. If you have a boring and predictable, or even insightful and thrilling guess as to what the name may be, do let us know in the forum located south of these very words.

I thought your 1080 name was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Revo's infamously lacking HD features.

My 'Famicom 360' name refers to the freedom the revolutionary controller affords the player - but is obviously impossible, due to M$ already adopting it for their console.

So you're saying your "joke" refers to that too? If it does then it sucks, and I've come up with an even BETTER meaning for 1080 than you originally intended!

HA! In your FACE Smelly!

Man I still go around calling the damnitable GameCube "dolphin" from time to time, I seriously hate this codename stuff I want to call it "revolution" I have come to think of it as the Nintendo Revolution, changing the name on me is just going to piss people off when they are talking about the revolution next week and accidently called it that and some prick in the office next to you goes: " actually its called "blah" now Revolution was just a codename" <--- it will happen and I'll stuff that guy's head into a desk drawer.

I think they should just stick with Revolution for the name. Just like Nintendo DS name it has stuck (even when they tried to change it) , and tells you really what you need to know about the machine, its revolutionary. Play it and you'll see why.

For a laugh, I've guessed some names that might come to life. I see some of you have other similar stuff.

"Nintendo Freecom" - Free motion and Famicom mixed together.

"Nintendo 360" - with 360 movement, it makes sense.

"Nintendo Video Wonder" -ooh, that's nice but very Japanese-only

"Nintendo Wonder Video" - more western sounding?

The last two, while using the word "video", will give people the
impression that it's something like a video or DVD player, that sits
under your television. I like.

"Nintendo FunBox" - PlayStation wannabe.

"Nintendo AssRipper" - as in, so good it'll tear you a new one.

"Nintendo MagiWand" - again, Japan only

"Nintendo Magic" - short, and rolls of the tongue.

"Nintendo Motion" / "Nintendo Free Motion" / "Nintendo
'Something-that-encapsulates-a-free-spirit-bullshit' "

"Nintendo Better than the Other Machines - Please Buy!"

"Nintendo TeleMaster" - again, synanomous with putting it under your
t.v., but sounds like those cheap "1000 in 1" games machines that you
can buy for a couple of quid in a village market and hook up to your
t.v.

"Nintendo Ultra 64" - why not.

"Nintendo Reality Machine" - stemmed from Project Reality, the reality
being that you actually DO have to wave your hand as if holding a
sword.

That's it. Any other sugegstions?

"Nintendo Revenuetion" as in, you know, hopefully it'll generate a lot of sales revenue for them.......(sorry)

lolz,

"Nintendo Yamauchi" - a small device covered in teeth, with a pair of large, tinted sunglass nesting on top.
