GRAW fails to take Number One slot

This week’s charts – Ubisoft denied, 360 grows

It’s another week in which Electronic Arts dominates the UK videogames charts, still claiming an impressive seven of the week’s top ten selling games, with FIFA Street 2 holding on to the top slot for the second week running.

Ubisoft’s Xbox 360 release of their first AAA-title of 2006, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GRAW) failed to knock EA Sport’s street soccer title off the No1 slot, a disappointment to Ubisoft after having thrown considerable marketing cash and effort at GRAW.

Still, not to belittle their achievement. For a 360 title to sell nearly 50,000 units in its first week is pretty good going. GRAW is the fastest selling game for Microsoft's next-gen system yet. And sales of the title will be bolstered by this week’s release of the Xbox version, and next week’s release of the PS2 version. The PC version of GRAW has slipped to May.

EA claims another top three slot with the new boxing game, Fight Night: Round 3, straight in at No3 last week. Sales of the Xbox 360 version of Fight Night: Round 3 were twice as good on the Xbox 360 as on the PlayStation 2.

So it’s a good news week for Microsoft, with the installed base of game-buying 360 owners clearly growing considerably. The early stock-shortage problems now seem to be a mere blip on the long-term sales of the console, as Peter Moore always predicted.

Other news from last week’s chart – UK gamers continue to lap up quality retro titles, with the PSP version of the classic Lemmings straight in at No12 – a clear 15 years after the crazy suicidal critters debuted on the Commodore Amiga. Now that makes SPOnG sigh with a deep sense of nostalgia and a worrying awareness of our own mortality.

Finally, the other new release last week also flies the retro flag, as Capcom’s Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max debuts at No28. Again, 15 years after the launch of the initial Street Fighter in the arcades. Oh God! We are getting old!
