Activision has signed UK based developers Gene Pool, a subsidiary of Warthog, to create a new X-Men title for next generation consoles. The X-Men license has done the rounds in its time, seeing incarnations on platforms including the original Nintendo NES, SNES, Master System, MegaDrive, Saturn, Game Boy and PlayStation.
At present, it is not clear what kind of game the new title will be. In the past X-Men titles have been almost exclusively fighting games, the best of which came from Capcom on the Saturn. Here’s what Ashley Hall, CEO of Warthog had to say. “We are delighted at the opportunity to work with Activision again. We intend to retain high game development standards at Warthog, and with Gene Pool, we aspire to create something unique that will exceed the visions of Activision, Marvel, and ourselves." Something unique? Sounds like a beat ‘em up is out of the question then.
Activision were proud of its newly acquired development team and license. "We pride ourselves on the quality of our titles and strength of our brands," said Julian Lynn-Evans, vice president of Activision's European studios. "Warthog did a great job on the development of Star Trek: Invasion and it's a pleasure to work with them on this exciting new project. We have the highest regard for the newly formed Gene Pool team."
No specific platform was mentioned though it is likely that the new X-Men game will feature on more than one. The guys over at Warthog can turn their hands to pretty much anything, as in the past they have developed titles for the PlayStation, Dreamcast, Game Boy and PC.
