Sony Announces Killzone: Liberation on PSP

Successful franchise ported to handheld.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) and Guerrilla (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of SCEE) have just announced a forthcoming version of their commercially successful franchise Killzone for PSP.

Killzone: Liberation, has been re-designed exclusively for Sony’s handheld and is due for release in Q4 2006. This new instalment in the Killzone series will feature a new intelligent third-person camera system which SCEE claims will be ideally suited for handheld gaming. SPOnG will endeavour to find out exactly how this system works as soon as we get an opportunity to talk to our contacts at SCEE or Guerrilla.

The story in Killzone: Liberation follows the conclusion of events in the first Killzone, with the battle against the Helghast still raging on. In Southern Vekta, the rules of war have been cast aside with the Helghast General - Metrac - employing brutal measures in order to seize the initiative. Returning as Templar, your mission is to undertake a covert operation to save hostages captured by Metrac, whilst ISA troops continue the fight for liberty.

Of course if you haven’t played the first Killzone - which to be honest we wouldn’t advise - all of the above might as well be written in Ukrainian.

Commenting on Killzone: Liberation, Herman Hulst, Guerrilla Managing Director, said: "We were keen to ensure Killzone: Liberation was totally unique and offered PSP owners a different Killzone experience. So, Killzone: Liberation has been developed from scratch – creating what we think is an intense portable gaming experience. Although Killzone: Liberation is totally new, it stays true to what made the first Killzone such a great success - the characters, weapons, style and a continuation of the same great plot."

SPOnG notes with some interest that Mr Hulst conspicuously omits to mention that Killzone: Liberation will not stay true to the gameplay of the first Killzone, which was critically panned upon release. With any luck, this version of Killzone for PSP will put right this situation for Sony.

If Sony manages to crack it, it's sure to have a major handheld title on its, er, hands. And by jove, following on from Nintendo’s news this morning about a newly designed DS and a whole raft of innovative DS titles planned in for Easter, Sony sure needs to pull something good out of its PSP bag PDQ.

Why? Killzone is a great game, a really great game and I don't understand why it got such a panning. It's not a Halo beater and it's not designed to be - well in terms of gameplay anyway.

while i cant comment on the games actual quality as i never did get aroudn to trying it... i can say with relitive certainty that it was designed to be at the very least a halo competitor... or sony wanted it because they thought it might be... and listening to the sony fans before it came out, they def seemed to think thats what it was.

Visually it was undoutedly luscious, especially given the hardware, but the gameplay was way too repetative and the enemy unvarying.

I may go back and revisit it, but my impression from the hours I've already spent is firmly set as written above.

The story as told through the cut scene narrative was also uncompelling, or at least lacking pace.

With a little work on the mission structure and "baddies" I think KZ would be a killer PSP and, further down the line, PS3 franchise.
