New DS Design...
Well, it’s almost become a tradition by now. As soon as rumours of a new Nintendo handheld design reach critical overload, lots of bored fanboy designers go away and put together what they would like to see the Big N come up with.

The best one we have seen so far by a country mile is this one by Yannis Bolman, courtesy of PSP and DS News. It’s like a handheld silver dream machine.

Not only does it feature Analogue mode with removable Revolution-style wireless controllers; it also features Touch screen mode and looks almost good enough to eat.

SPOnG is slightly unsure about using the wireless controllers. Perhaps our fellow commuters on London's stinking Victorian underground train system would not appreciate us waving our hands around pretending to be Harry Potter on the crowded 7.30AM tube from Archway.

And - this is the killer - it all folds up into a neat little pocket-sized box for all those metrosexual urban trendies that Nintendo seem to be so keen to court - the ideal size to to pop into their Prada handbags or into the back pocket of their Stone Island jeans, as they whizz down New Bond Street on their classic Lambrettas.

Oh, hang on. It’s not real is it? Its not the swinging Sixties anymore either. Balls!

It was a nice dream while it lasted. Let us know what you think of the design in the forum anyway.

Well, it’s almost become a tradition by now. When Spong is having a slow day it posts non-news. LOL. Why don't you just make up news like you usually do.

I expect the new DS design to look pretty much like the old one..........only with two halves that actually fit together!!!!!

"removable Revolution-style wireless controllers"

I so no mention of any such thing. The side controls just fold away underneath the system.

Which we don't and never have*, but if you want to go on believing what others write about us, then that's fine.

*we are, however, guilty of running news founded on insider info (and in the distant past, unsubstantiated 'tipoffs') that all too often doesn't pan out. Then again, when it does happen many months later (see example), the naysayers forget that the story on SPonG was actually correct and fail to reassess their prejudice. Hey ho.

NEWS FLASH: This just in, famed internet video game forum hang about "acidviper" has been brought up on charges of being a douche bag! While details are scarce at this point we have heard, on good authority, that the charges stem from an insident involving a enema bag and a sampling of his mother used douche. More details as they become availbale, stay tuned!

Well, after they'd designed the GB Micro and the DS, the GBA SP design now looks old. So it's not going to look like a GBA SP (as much).

It won't have an analogue stick, because the original doesn't have an analogue stick, and they're not going to make games specifically for the new one that don't work on the old one and, vice versa, an analogue stick is invalid with pre-existing games.

The buttons won't be on the outside if they can help it (which they can), because they are fragile, compared to the alternative, which is a plain piece of plastic.

It will probably have a clamshell design, because otherwise it probably wouldn't fit in your pocket! However, if it has 3 layers, it would also be (roughly) 3 times as thick, so is there really much point?

So, that is what I think. Not saying it looks bad, though. To be honest, I tried making my own design (for my own amusement), but I honestly couldn't think of any way that I could improve the current design that drastically.

I think it will have a very similar layout, probably just a slightly different case, maybe a bit smaller. They can't make the screens smaller, because one of them is a touch-screen, and the smaller it gets, the harder it is to use accurately. And they can't make the screens different sizes because games use both to display two halves of the same image (sometimes, but it still matters).

Given that, I doubt Nintendo will release a new design any time soon. They could still release more colours, which is probably as profitable, considering they don't actually have to manufacture new parts.

The other thing is, if you look at the difference between the original design (when it was first shown) and the actual design, there's not much difference really, which suggests to me that there's not that much that Nintendo can think of to improve it either.

I think the case will be more curvy or rounded, and a bit smaller, but that's probably going to be the most significant change.

I played around with opne of those motorola PLEB phones th other day. I've had a Motorola before, and I hated the OS so much I dumped it within weeks (to Stef, who lost/broke/washed/sold it on ebay), but the PLEB is so attractive, I nearly conteplated getting one. I was particularly into the Star Trek OS communicator style spring-flip. But the smooth design combined with the flip seemed to me a recipe for disaster. I'm betting this become the most dropped phone in history.

OK, went off one one a big there. But I think a nice PEBL style matt-white design with a clam-shell design (without a spring) could make a fabulous design for DS SP. And thinner than DS, please.
