RF Online: Codemasters enter the MMORPG arena

First look at Rising Force Online

Posted by Staff
Codemasters Online Gaming has today announced the availability of pre-order packs for Rising Force Online, its luscious looking and much-anticipated sci-fi fantasy MMORPG. RF Online marks Codies' first tentative steps into the fast-growing MMORPG market. Check out these new screens from the game, which SPOnG received earlier today.

Anyone who buys an RF Online pre-order pack gets guaranteed access to the RF Online beta test, which is shortly to go live, along with a soundtrack CD and some other exclusive RF Online gubbins. The ‘final’ fully tested version is scheduled to go live on Feb 24th.

Before we go on, SPOnG would just like to ask - what is it about MMORPG’s that makes them take over people’s brains? Seemingly normal folk start playing a little bit of World of Warcraft, and within no time at all they are spending all of their non-sleeping, non-working time holed up in dark rooms imagining themselves as little dwarves. Its certainly a bizarre hobby (addiction?), yet one which millions of gamers worldwide have embraced wholeheartedly.

Especially, that is, those crazy Koreans who, if we believe some western media reports, regularly collapse dead, straight onto their keyboard in their local Internet café, from playing the latest MMORPG for 20 days straight with no sleep. SPOnG reckons that all this must be true, cos The Sun sez.

Anyway, back to RF Online. The look and feel of the game is pretty unique – it’s a mix of more traditional fantasy MMO content alongside a more unique and futuristic sci-fi and cyberpunk feel. The game is set in a deep space galaxy known as Novus, where players take their pick to join one of three all-powerful warring factions, all battling it out for total control of the Novus galaxy.

The three character types you can choose from are from each of the main factions. Firstly you can choose from the Bellato Union and take control of individual and massive robot-like battle units. Then again you might opt for Holy Alliance Cora; a mystical race that utilises the power of magic. Finally you could plump for the Accretia Empire, a futuristic alien race that boasts advanced weaponry systems. Essentially you can pick from Mech-Warrior, Elf or Cyborg.

The in-game visuals, including the various characters and detailed environments and settings, are nothing less than beautiful. SPOnG is keen to see how fans of the MMORPG genre, both old and new, pick up on this title. We like the cyberpunk feel that RF Online has and we’re looking forward to getting involved in one of the daily ‘epic battles’ which are to be scheduled to attract the maximum number of gamers.

David Solari, Director of Codemasters Online Gaming, reckons that the game will “see players engaging in the most epic battles ever seen in a MMO role-playing game”. Well, from our first impressions of the game we hope this is true, as its really showing some promise in the looks department.

For some strange reason, whilst we were being shown a quick presentation of the game, SPOnG got around to thinking about Elite. We think it’s probably something to do with the potential depth of this game. We also think we might well get sucked into believing that we actually do live in the Novus galaxy some point in the very near future. We’ll be in on the beta test next week. Goodbye, real life!

How MMORPG's suck people in so much with its addictiveness is very easy. Just spread the content very thinly but not too thin so it looks acceptable to level up so you can claim your prize you will get on level X. It creates addictive gameplay but is it fun? No, MMORPG's have very boring core gameplay but seems "fun" because of the huge chatbox thing and offcourse the leveling up thing with rewards on specific levels.

Say a bit of this game at the London Anime Expo back in October 2005. It looks damn good too with some nice character designs. I hope Codemasters do it justice.
