Stories emerged over the weekend indicating that one of SPOnG’s favourite British actresses, the sultry English Rose that is Rachel Weisz, is almost certainly replacing previous incumbent Jonell Elliot as the new voice of Lara Croft in the forthcoming Tomb Raider: Legend.
This - if it turns out to be the case - is very good news indeed for both fans of Tomb Raider and for fans of Weisz’s sultry rasp and instantly recognisable plummy voice. Listening to her speak almost makes us want to start smoking cigs again. Her surname, for those who shamefully don’t already know is pronounced (aptly) Vice.
34-year-old Weisz is no stranger to Hollywood fame having appeared in a string of blockbuster motion pictures including The Mummy, Enemy at the Gates, Constantine and more recently The Constant Gardener. SPOnG has to admit to even having enjoyed Nick Hornby’s sentimental blubfest About A Boy primarily due to the astute casting of Weisz in one of the main roles. We never cried though. Honest!
Before hitting the Hollywood big-time, Weisz had established herself in the UK as a well-respected film and theatre actress. SPOnG fondly remembers her first outing on the silver screen, in 1993’s dog-on-a-string crustie drama Dirtysomething. We were mesmerised back then, even when she sported dreadlocks and mud-caked army boots. The idea of her voicing Lara Croft is almost too much for us.
SPOnG has to be clear that Eidos has yet to make an official announcement, but that it does seem very likely that Ms Weisz is top of its list. According to a recent issue of US PlayStation magazine, the publication noted that it was "...buoyed by the prospect of Rachel Weisz providing her plummy British twang….we're expecting great things."
Tomb Raider: Legend is looking like its going to inject some much-needed oomph back into the franchise – watch this space for more news on sultry English Roses as we get it.
