Development draws closer to completion on the seemingly 'been-in-development-for-aeons' videogame version of Francis Ford Coppola’s movie classic ‘The Godfather’. EA seems to have been showing eager consumers maximum disrespect by continually promising then postponing the release of this hugely anticipated movie tie-in. And of course we all know what happens to those who show us disrespect, as Don Corleone taught us years ago in the original movie. The family cannot tolerate disrespect!
Anyways, in order to step up The Godfather hype-machine, which is potentially in danger of running out of steam after having been in overdrive for most of 2005, EA has issued a new batch of some superb looking screens from the game. Check them all out here, and get ready to do some of the Corleone family’s dirty work on a console near you very soon.
The story of both film and game is fairly straightforward. Just to recap for anyone who has shamefully not yet seen one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time; in the game, your character joins the Corleone family and earns respect through both loyalty and fear while you rise through the ranks of the Mafia, with the aim of becoming a Don in a fully free-roaming living, mid-20th century New York city. From what we’ve seen and played of the game so far, it’s a corker. Imagine something like GTA, but it’s The Godfather, and (whisper it) maybe even better than GTA, and that’s more or less it.
One of the real USP’s of the game is the fact that the movie world is recreated so faithfully, with all the major character likenesses from the movie included and many of the most famous scenes recreated as in-game missions. Some of the legendary actors lending their voices to the game include the late Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, James Caan as Sonny Corleone and Robert Duvall as Consigliore Tom Hagen. SPOnG can vouch for the fact that when you first meet Don Corleone in the game, it's one of those rare 'hair-on-back-of-neck going up' gaming moments.
The game was scheduled for a pre-Xmas release last year – with a full-on multi-million dollar marketing campaign in place, pumping up consumer desire to finally be able to re-live their greatest Mafia movie moments. However, the game slipped to 2006. SPOnG does not yet have a more exact release date other than it will be out ‘sometime later this year’. We’ll be bringing you our full preview of the game very soon, to let you know what we think of the current build, which should give us some idea of how near it is to finally going gold.
In the meantime, you will have to just check out the screens whilst imagining committing the worst possible kinds of ultraviolence to enemies of The Family. SPOnG will be sure to continue to try to get some concrete sense out of EA regarding The Godfather’s actual planned release date.
