Starship Troopers online community grows

Critically panned, but still popular it seems

SPOnG is a big fan of Starship Troopers the movie. Well, the first one at least. The less said about Starship Troopers 2 the better really. And we don't really mind the recent FPS videogame version of Starship Troopers too much either. Whilst the game was critically panned in many quarters, its actually a very playable FPS and a faithful recreation of the Starship Troopers universe. Its in no way groundbreaking, but if you like the movie then its a pretty safe bet to say you'll probably enjoy the game.

It would seem that, despite the poor reviews, there is a strong and growing online community of Starship Troopers game fans out there - as the games' publisher, Empire Interactive, has just announced the next stage of its continued multi player support for the bug blasting FPS.

Whilst the game had a critical mauling by many members of the so-called specialist press, it still seems to be building up a strong fan-base, with a number of fan sites such as those listed on the official Starship Troopers site at http://www.starshiptroopersgame.com/news/

Seven new maps are now available to players for download now from the official website. Check out these new screenshots SPOnG's taken from the new maps.

Four of the new maps are Deathmatch/Team Deathmatch maps - where up to 32 players are pitted against each other in various arenas, the objective being to kill your opponents and make you claim for the top score. Team Deathmatch allows players to team up and collectively aim for their place at the top of the kill table. The other three are new Co-operative maps – which allow up to 8 players to form their own squad of 'Mobile Infantry' and play together to defeat the bugs.

It seems the growing popularity of Starship Troopers is a good example of one of those situations where the opinions of a number of seasoned games journo's dont really seem to impact upon the opinions of the great unwashed gameplaying public out there.

This is an interesting piece of pleasing news to me because I purchased ST for a friend for Xmas. He's been a big fan of Star Wars Galaxies online play for a while, so I'm sure he'll love the news that Empire's ST game is building a growing fan base.

Since my friend is a big ST fan I'm damn sure he'd 'like to know more'. New maps and online play are icing on the cake. I'd also hope that the sleeper popularity will help Empire try ST on consoles or perhaps a bug busting tour PC sequel.

We know this series has potential even despite a duffer sequel film, but more influence can be drawn from the Heinlein novels (if not done so enough already).

Bravo to Empire, it's not easy for smaller developers out there. On top of that game journos can't always be right, the people have to make their minds up themselves. Right now ST is the nearest thing we have to an Alien game licence but with more potential punch. I just hope Empire rewards the fans and improve the game.

Good luck, soldier!

Hi Joji,

What did your mate think of ST as I've just noticed it on Play for £7.99 and am quite tempted.

Anyone else played it?

He likes the game. I done a little research to see what it got score wise from different websites, before I made the purchase and it got a pretty good score.

Damn, I'd say for £7.99 you getting a better deal. His copy cost me £15 on ebay brand new. Either ain't that bad considering it goes for £34.99 full price.

Sure, it may not be a Farcry or Quake 4 but it's worth picking up all the same, more so considering it was almost cancelled during development.

I hope Emipre Interactive bite the bullet and make a second ST game, judging by the fanbase it's building it would make sense.

Another one that's recently been cancelled is JoWood's Stargate Alliance game. Considering how big the fanbase is for that tv show, Empire could make a killing on the game cut of it. If not them, I hope someone does pick up the gaunlet for both..

Thanks for that, ordered and hopefully on it's way. I'm not expecting it to be amazing, just wanted something to pickup and play kinda thing. Don't get to spend as much time gaming as I'd like anymore!

It would be nice to think that someone would pick and run with the Stargate game, I just can't see publishers going for it, although we can live in hope 8~)
