Exclusive SPOnG interview with Gavin Raeburn
Following our recent preview of the forthcoming TOCA Race Driver 3, SPOnG decided to collar the game’s producer, Gavin Raeburn, up at Codemasters in Warwickshire last week, to ask him a few questions about one of the our most highly anticipated driving games of 2006. Gavin has some interesting stuff to share with us about how Codies have managed to produce such a monster of a game and, more importantly, how the hell they've managed to squeeze the whole lot onto one DVD.

As Gavin notes, its all, “a far cry from the original TOCA where we had less than ten cars and tracks in the game and developed the whole project in just ten months with a dozen people!”. It certainly is.

Previews of the game have been very positive across the board. You can read SPOnG’s preview of TRD3 here http://www.spong.com/x?eid=10109323

Your drivers’ cheery Scottish Race Manager Rick makes a return in TDR3 as your pit chief and manager, and guides you through a series of championships where you get to experience all the many diverse elements of motorsport contained within the game. The online elements of the game have also been hugely improved since the last iteration, with loads of new features which will surely guarantee the return of TOCA fans, both old and new, in droves.

Gavin also tells us a little more about the other top driving games which have inspired him and the rest of the TOCA team – including their love of both the Burnout and Project Gotham Racing series.

SPOnG suggested to Gavin that we would like to see a feature in future TOCA Race Drivers to allow the drivers to get a little more friendly with the foxy pit lane dolly birds. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like this particular gameplay mechanic will be something they’ll be developing, as Gavin says: “I'm sure there are quite a few members of the team who would be happy to work on the research for that ….. Somehow though, I don’t think Rick would approve. He prefers that his drivers keep their minds on the action taking place on the track!”.

Aaah well, SPOnG is not deterred. Rest assured that we will continue to persevere in our attempts to persuade games developers to integrate simulated chatting up and dating foxy birds features into high quality driving games. If anyone has any ideas how this might work in practice, just let us know in the forums below…
