Blizzard's World of Warcraft, the massively acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (trips off the tongue, doesn't it?) has seen a shade over five million subscribers since its launch a year ago. The figures comprise all those who have paid a subscription fee to play WoW and those who bought the retail game box complete with the one-month access pass, combined with South East Asian players who access the game via a rent-to-play gameroom.
"World of Warcraft's growth continues to exceed all our expectations," commented Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment in a press release issued yesterday. "We want to reiterate our thanks to the millions of players worldwide and to all the retailers who have enthusiastically supported the game over the past year. Our commitment to continue growing World of Warcraft is stronger than ever, with development on future content patches and on our 2006 expansion, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, well underway. We look forward to offering even more content for current customers in the months ahead and welcoming new players into the world this holiday season."
A further expansion pack is planned for 2006, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, which will bring more lands, races, quests, monsters and spells, plus 10 new levels of power for those with a MMORPG bent.
