New High-Budget Simpsons Game in the Works

New game well into planning.

It was revealed today that publishing monster Electronic Arts has secured the rights to The Simpsons license, in a deal that will spawn at least one major EA-developed title in the next 12 months.

The game will be based on the TV series as a whole rather than an element of Springfield life as previous games have focused on, with the deal signed with Fox taking rights away from Vivendi, even though the French publisher’s efforts had been widely regarded as ‘quite good’.

EA will be developing the license in its Redwood Shores studio and aims to work closely with the TV series’ production staff – voice talent from the stars are also confirmed.

"This is something EA's been interested in for years and now game development and technology is at a place where The Simpsons characters and world will really come alive in these games," said Nick Earl, vice president and general manger of EA Redwood Shores.

The Simpsons executive producer James L. Brooks commented, "I think this is a great opportunity for us, primarily because it brings with it the possibility of free EA games." See what he did there?

Expect further announcements in the coming weeks.
