It’s about this time every year that Konami likes to release its world class football game, Pro Evolution Soccer. And it’s also about this time that the game likes to take over at the top of the charts, knocking its biggest footy rival, Electronic Arts’ FIFA, off the top.
We can report that this year is no different, with PES5 spectacularly dislodging FIFA 06 after the EA game spent three weeks at number one. PES5 has shifted a solid 200,000 units in its first week on sale, while FIFA slithers down to number three in the All Formats charts, as supplied by ChartTrack, behind SEGA’s Football Manager, another new entry. It's official, then: Brits like football.
PES also comes in at number one in the console charts too, sitting pretty at the top of the table for both PS2 and Xbox.
We’ve been playing PES5 this week and it’s blooming marvellous. The next instalment in Konami’s football odyssey is always something we eagerly await each year, and we’re mighty impressed with the improvements and refinements to the game. As well as cheery house music in the menu screens, gameplay is less forgiving, as tackling gets easier but possession gets that much harder. You are rewarded for being more decisive and instinctive in your style of play.
But what are your feelings on it, dear readers? Let us know in the forum.
