Going online today is
GameTap the new service from American company Turner Broadcasting System Inc. Downloadable games services have been in the news recently, and both the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution proudly offer these as features. Much speculated upon however, especially by those who regularly use emulators totally free of charge, is how much the games will cost per download.
The first prices for a downloadable game service are given today, not on any console, but on the good old PC. Providing you have a good broadband connection and a fairly capable graphics card, you can dine at this all-you-can-eat monthly buffet for just $14.95. We’re assuming that although the site is based in the US, anyone from anywhere in the world can subscribe, just as you can with certain US-based pornography websites. Not that we’d know, of course; we, erm, just heard about it somewhere.
Your monthly fee gives you access to a plethora of gaming gems, with arcade classics like Golden Axe, Lunar Rescue, Joust and Wonder Boy, large selections of Game Gear, Megadrive and Master System titles, and even a couple of Dreamcast games: Mr. Driller and Hydro Thunder. There’s also a selection of some pretty wizard PC titles, including Beyond Good and Evil, Homeworld 2 and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six. The library is currently 300+ games strong, many of them SEGA classics, with more games set to be added every month. Seems like a pretty good deal to us, but gamers are a notoriously stingy crowd when it comes to forking out any money at all for old games. There’s even a two weeks free trial – can’t say fairer than that. What do you reckon? Let us know in the forum!
