GTA Liberty City Stories PSP Info and Images Leak

First big PSP title hits web – full story and screens inside.

The inboxes of SPOnG’s editorial staff are strange places indeed. You’ll mostly find confirmations for ‘Guaranteed Growth Product’ orders and press releases about mouse mats from people we accidentally gave out business cards to at E3 five years ago. Oh, and the occasional bit of stuff like this. And sometimes this.

Today however has been somewhat more eventful, with the ever-stable Outlook application from Microsoft making like a robot cuckoo and parping electronically to inform us of the arrival of something new – namely GTA PSP screens and information. Take that, Extendo-Grow-4000!

Seemingly lifted from a Spanish magazine (what is it about Spanish magazines and the refusal to adhere to embargos?) we have a fresh and compelling point-by-point explanation of some of the more interesting aspects of Liberty City Stories.

  • First up is some bad news. According to the information we saw, players will not be flying around in aeroplanes or helicopters. Boats and road vehicles only, we’re afraid

  • The Michael Madsen-voiced lead protagonist Toni (yes, the girly spelling) is controlled using the analogue nub

  • Various camera angles - both when on foot and in vehicles - can be selected...by using the Select button no less!

  • There will a wide selection of outfits to choose from

  • There will be new landmarks in Liberty City as well as old areas you’ll recognise

  • R3 missions were confirmed as being included

  • All of the cars from the original GTA3 will be in included, as well as all of the motorcycles featured in Vice City

  • The graphics have been tended to closely, with massive draw-distances and detailed reflections being of note

  • We would have called Rockstar to ask about the various elements of its new game but they refused to talk to us after we posted our piece about San Andreas's two-player mode.

More news on all big games (even those in little packages) right here on SPOnG today, tomorrow and forever more.

When will Rockstar create a game engine that is superior to any that was used on the PS1?

Don't get me wrong, Vice City was fun (mainly for the ambiance of the time period), but running around outside a vehicle was a chore; I never felt really "in control" of the character (Especially in GTA3)

So please, Rockstar, tighten up the controls before you release another iteration on a somewhat now-tiring series. I know they could do it right, but I think there's a little too much effort trying to milk the liscence for everything its got.

That I continue to come back to something with such an awful control and camera system is testament to GTA's superb game design.

While this game will be a 50cent wannabe's wet dream I'm a bit tired of GTA, but as good as the series is it's now making Rockstar look like a one trick pony.

PSP is a new handheld, respect gamers and give them something more original than bloody GTA again. We all know that this game won' take that long to be made because of the similarity of PSP-PS2 tech.

You made this kind of game popular Rockstar, but can you do anymore than this or are you doomed to live off the scraps of past successes?

But they had Manhun....yeah, okay. However, I'm wondering that maybe they're doing the same thing because they keep releasing it first on the PS2, maybe they could to more if they planned for the Xbox's hardware, or at least up the graphics.

Rockstar North would definitely do their "respeck+ cred" some favours if they created some new IP... but it's not as if they're flogging a dead horse. The last 3 GTA's were instant No.1's - and they just about sufficiently tweak the formula each time for me to keep falling for those massive, sprawling, sandbox cities.

It'll be interesting to see their next move when interest in the GTA brand dries up.

Did CockStar really have a bitch flap about that two player piece? What a bunch of tarts. I've had reason to so dislike C*'s PR folks, but now I'm even more compelled to drop a K or two in their drinks at the next industry bash >;)
