According to a report surfacing on Impress PC Watch with Sony 'Head of Talking About Stuff' Ken Kutaragi, the PlayStation 3 hard disc will come bundled with a copy of the Linux operating system.
The decision seemingly stems from Sony’s increasingly transparent plans on providing the PlayStation 3 with media capabilities far outstripping the original brief of a games console. Kutaragi-san also mentioned that the firm is looking at the possibility of delivering a bespoke PlayStation 3 version of Linux, likely to be targeted at delivering music, movies and games whilst giving end users what, according to spin, will be a super-computer for the home.
In related news, Kutaragi-san put the issue of a bundled hard disk for PlayStation 3 to rest, stating that the firm would not be including a mass storage medium as standard with its next home console. The 2.5” unit captured the imagination of attendees to SCE’s pre-E3 conference this year and has been the subject of much speculation of late.
We'll bring you more on all this as we get it.
