Rockstar has named the Grand Theft Auto game it is working on for the PSP, and also supplied a release date. The game will be called GTA: Liberty City Stories, though it isn't clear whether the game's environments will be re-workings of those appearing in previous games or all new. The 'Stories' part of the title is interesting too. Does it imply that there will be several different playable characters rather than the traditional one?
The game is slated for a September release, just after the deluxe handheld itself ships in the Europe. All three incarnations of the crime simulator sold in huge volumes for the PlayStation 2, and it's highly likely that this title will prove a unit shifter.
The GTA series is known nearly as much as anything else for its soundtracks, and this ties in well with the PSP's position as a multi-purpose portable media device. Which leaves just one problem: with the comparitively huge screen on that thing, the little old lady next to you on the train is going to have a very clear view of you carving up hookers with a chainsaw.
