Perhaps the most unexpected news of E3 so far is the news that Electronic Arts will be supporting Tiger Telematic’s Gizmondo. Yes, that’s right. You may remember that it was EA’s refusal to support SEGA’s Dreamcast at launch that was one of three reasons for the lovely, lovely machine’s downfall, along with it’s vulnerability to piracy and incompetent marketing.
Well, the industry megalith seems to have changed its tune as far as support of non-surefire consoles goes. It has continued to support the Nintendo Gamecube, despite the machine having a smaller userbase than its Sony and MS counterparts, though it has to be said only with ports of PS2 games that make it look bad. EA have also been enthusiastic about the DS, releasing a number of titles for the handheld’s launch, an admirable gesture, even if Tiger Woods did turn out to be rubbish.
It also seems that Tiger - Telematics, not Woods - has relentlessly courted EA support for their handheld project, which is still regarded by many (make that most) as doomed. Tiger has wisely observed the sway the enormous third-party publisher has over the rest of the industry. SSX 3 and FIFA 2005 have been confirmed as being in the works for the Gizmondo, as well as a third, un-named top-selling title.
The people at Tiger also realise how important it is that they make an impact on the dubious public this year at E3, and they plan to announce more than 15 titles over the course of the show.
