Sega bid farewell to pirates

New Dreamcast hardware to make piracy harder

Posted by Staff
Sega has recently released a limited edition version of the Dreamcast console in Japan called Sakura Taisen Dreamcast for Internet, which features pictures of the characters from Sakura Taisen on the machine’s casing. Nothing new you may think. But, the machine has been tweaked by Sega and will now only recognise Dreamcast dedicated GD ROMs and audio CDs. This move pretty much prevents games from being copied to CD from the source code via the Neo Geo Pocket Color port. As there are no GigaDiscs writers available at this time so it seems that Sega has finally beaten the pirates.

Sega of Japan has also mentioned that all new Dreamcast consoles throughout the world will feature this new anti pirating hardware. This must come as a welcome break for Sega. Having recently gone on record stating that the company will be pulling out of hardware production in the short to medium term. With Dreamcast sales not meeting expectations the last thing Sega needs is people ripping off its software.
