Hironobu Sakaguchi, revered in gaming circles for his time at SquareSoft when he oversaw Final Fantasy VII, has revealed the first project to come from his recently-formed Mistwalker game studio.
In an interview posted on Nintendo Japan’s official DS page, Sakaguchi-san outlines the use of the DS’ touch panel as the ideal interface for what sounds like a Sim City-inspired piece of strategy management gaming.
"I'm a fan of strategy role-playing games, but I've never created one myself. I'm planning to design one on my own, writing its scenario as well,” explained the former Square head. “I think that the elements in strategy RPG, such as moving around the pieces or instructing units to move into areas, go perfectly with the touch panel. I'm hoping to make a strategy game that can be deeply enjoyed using just the stylus.”
No other details were outlined, though SPOnG suspects that the project is more advanced than Sakaguchi-san is letting on. Expect to see something emerge at this May’s E3.
