A forum post by a member of staff at UK studio Sumo Digital has sought to debunk news of the Japanese version of Outrun 2 containing tracks from the coin-op rework Special Tours SP.
The news, which surfaced in the latest issue of Dorimaga is, "...not true. There are some changes to the Bonus Tracks (that's the Scud and Daytona ones), some tweaks to the Mission Mode and we've changed the in-game text to Japanese, but that's the lot. No SP tracks in there at all.”
We contacted Sumo for comment today, though the official line is that it’s a massive secret and there’s no official line and that they’re just the developer and that we should contact Sega who it was agreed wouldn’t say anything in case they got in trouble with the Japanese.
Great.
However, this news does make sense. The SP tracks are widely expected to be released for Xbox at some point via Live, though this may be under threat following sluggish sales of the game, a problem that the endless barrage of positive coverage for Outrun 2 couldn’t overcome.
It is also worth mentioning that the bonus tracks were the only glitched aspect of the Xbox port so delaying the Japanese release to allow enough time to have these issues ironed out makes perfect sense.
