Wario Ware DS adds microphone to the mix

Nintendo mini-games to use voice control.

Posted by Staff
Nintendo has just opened the digital doors to its new Wario Ware Inc DS website, dropping a couple of interesting tidbits of information in the process. Most of the text is Japanese; nothing unusual there, but using the internationally recognised language of pictures, there are still lots of pretty things to look at. And these are more understandable.

Amongst the outlining of some of the mini-games to go on offer in the DS incarnation of Wario Ware (which will include watermelon slicing, guiding skiers down mountains, striking matches and hammer-throwing) is the inclusion of an all new character, called Mike. Cunningly, Mike has taken his name from his ability to use microphones. Mike is, in fact, a karaoke robot.

Microphone compatibility should be an interesting twist to the already twisted Wario Ware concept and we shall watch with interest to see how it’s implemented. We’re already looking forward to this as a possible early gem for the DS. With hipster Jimmy T scratching the touch-screen, and 9v and 18v bringing back retro titles for stylus play, the finished package with added mic-mini-games could be something rather special.

The full website’s over at http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/azwj

Have a look if you want to.

A microphone? That's a great idea! Do you think if I said into it: "Hey Spong, do you remember that competition prize you promised me back in MAY, talked some crap about and then since just ignored my emails" it'd magically turn up? Or do you think I'd STILL be ignored over a prize I didn't ask for in the first place?

The DS already has voice recognition software built in doesnt it? I cant remeber, anyhow it does indeed bring a good twist to the title and im sure will work in the same way as the mic on MarioParty6.

Will the next Wario title use the mic on the Gamecube? I hope so!

Most of us forget about the mic with most otping for focus on stylus use.

It's only a matter of time before we have singing and sport commentary games, maybe even some courtroom action games.

Ron Atkinson's Soccer Pundit 2005 would be a great idea - talk utter crap down the mic while watching a football match, scoring bonus points along the way by offending racial minorities.

Fantastic!

Dude, I think that would be a fantastic idea for a game. Football fans around the world would love it to death and the DS too.

The game would have an option to produce your own McCoist style commentary (in various languages too). The DS would run the games engine, while you comment on the match you could fiddle why cameras and replay etc (or maybe play the footy game yourself and comment on it at the same time too). Start in the lower leagues and work your way up to the Premiership. Cool football facts and trivia will test your knowledge and a few bonus stages in between.

Would be great alternative to those bloody karaoke games. Even have a NFL version for the yanks later on.

Hey, it might not happen but we can still dream and not a bad idea for fans who can't shut up. LOL. Sports Interactive, this is your cue. Just kidding.

Hehe, good ideas there. Id imagine the DS recognition would be quite limited but im sure we will see some sort of Karakoe title coming soon. Unfortunately.

A version of Mario Party would also be cool for the DS using the mic input.
