Doom III for the mighty Mac revealed

Gore and scariness available on the machine you love to hate

Posted by Staff
Unless you’re a designer, artist or just generally a bit ‘different’ chances are you’ll hate it whenever you have to use a Mac. It only has one mouse button, the keyboard shortcuts don’t work and if something goes wrong, you’ve no idea how to fix it.

But there is another world. Freedom and power, ease of use with auto recognition, the platform’s proponents cry! And it’s not a Microsoft product, it looks better, girls like them more…

SPOnG remains divided on the issue.

However, now that the mandatory amount of filler text is in place, we can get to the bones of this particular story, which concerns that fact that id Software will be releasing a version of the some people like, it, others don’t so much Doom III for the Mac.

The required system spec reads:

Mac OS X 10.3.6 or later
PowerPC G5 1.5 GHz or faster
384MB RAM (512MB recommended)
2.2 GB free disk space
ATI Radeon 8500/nVidia GeForce 3 or better
32MB of Video Ram (VRAM)
DVD drive required to install and play

The game is slated for release into the US at the end of next February, a situation likely to be mirrored in Europeland.

Enjoy these rather special Mac screenshots too, courtesy of the lovely IP-paranoid boys in Mesquite.

I switched from PC to Mac over year ago, and I can honestly say that I've never looked back. But because the Mac only holds a 5% share of the hardware market, companies either port games really late, or not at all to the platform. So as a games machine, it won't really be able to compete or hold it's own, until it's market share grows. Which is a shame, because putting the PC and Mac head-to-head not only shows that it's current Operating System can do anything that a Windows machine can do, but the majority of the time, it can do it better... and with style! (And by the way, I'm not a designer, or an artist, or a bit different, or a girl, or gay, before you comment!)

We'll have none of that kind of prejudice here. Macs are better than PCs. Fact.

Except for games. Where they suck - not technically, but because there are virtually no games available.

Are you reletively new to computing generally though? Because your allusion to the Mac gaining market share seems to ignore the trends of the last 20 years, during which time Mac has steadily but inexorably lost market share.

You also seem surprised the the Mac does everything as well as, if not better than, Windows... but this should be no surprise, since Windows stole ALL its ideas directly from the Mac... Even XP had to wait for MacOS X to show the way.

The answer to your question is no... I am not new to computing. Any overlook on my part with regards to the state of Apple's market share over the last 20 years is intentional, I assure you. But just like Nintendo reinvented the games market in the eighties and reigned supreme for almost 2 decades... It has now come 3rd in the current generations of console wars. So I would tend not to put a lot of credence in the past turn of events, as the future has always a habit of surprising you.

You honestly can't compare the console market with the PC market. The PC market is essentially a monopoly, with alomst 90% of all computers use the windows platform. the SONY market share is not nearly that close in the console market. Even still Microsoft is not going down anytime soon so don't expect a big turn around for Mac anytime soon. Even still, if people had to choose between mac and linux most people would choose linux as there OS. There is a middleware that helps pc developers create current titles for the mac platform without much trouble but most refuse to use it. In the end Apple is mostly for casual computer users. Linux is mostly for hardcore computer users and Windows is for everything.

I agree with some of what you say, but I have to strongly disagree with your last sentence. The Mac is in no way a casual machine. A few examples: More and more people / companies are turning to the Mac for their personal / business solutions. Even George Lucas used a suite of Macs to clean and edit the original Star Wars masters so they were good enough for DVD release. The top Super Computer in the world is no longer the Earth Simulator (PC) but a cluster of Macs. George Bush (even though he's a prat) has started a program to replace all high-level computers in the US government to Macs, as they are significantly more secure. There are many examples like this all over the world. So I’m just saying that you shouldn't underestimate the little man. Also worth a note: In it's hey day, Nintendo made more money than the ENTIRE movie industry put together! So as comparisons go, I don't think me comparing Apple to the games industry was that far off!
