Sony president Ken Kutaragi has made fresh comments that have plunged the battery life expectations widely held for the PSP back into the pit of darkness, undoing some natty spin work from last week.

Speaking to Japanese press, Kutaragi-san said, “A puzzle game will last longer, but Ridge Racer will probably be shorter than that," he admitted, revealing finally on the record for the first time what has been suspected for some time – that unless one is playing a very specific type of game with a very specific hardware configuration, Sony’s four to six hour power life claim can be discarded.

Kutaragi-san continued, “In the future, we'd like a single charge to last for a flight between Narita and New York," hinting that perhaps an enhanced power cell is under consideration for the PSP.

Isn't '4-6 hours' exactly how long the battery lives of the Game Gear and Lynx were quoted as being when they were launched?

Ah, progress...

This betery tech/power drain relationship is kinda like the evolution of PC tech.

Just when Intel or AMD come up with a better, faster more efficient CPU, Microsoft writes even more bloat into its OS to render it unnoticable.

4-6 hours is bloody poor. Dunno why Sony didn't just design the PSP to run off our body heat instead, at least the thing would last til we get a decent go of it.

Sony didn't think the PSP out properly at all IMO.
Whole thing seems rushed before it's design is finished. They have no excuse for such bad battery life, and they sure as hell ain't amateurs with electronics.

Joji, this is SONY your talking about, what do you expect!!! BAD Battery life the least, and yes they are definetly not amateurs, but further not a producer of high quality product either!!!

They are riddled with high fail rates, and poor assembley!!!

I'm afraid all you buy is a brand name engineered in the most cost effective (cheap quality & production) manner covered in a asthetically pleasing shell with reasonable functionality. This is SONY. Too bad with the PSP they have to loose considerably on the price to make up for their poor product.

I cant believe SONY try and push this crap called consumer electronics down our throats, along with 99% of the IP catalouge SONY call Movies, Music & Video Games respectively!!!

Now its time to try and monopolise ALL portable media devices through convergence onto a platform called PSP, specialising in no particular area and offering no real incentive other than a large screen.

A large screen mind you, which must be operated at half its potential whilst playing Puyo Puyo hoping the battery doesnt overheat or run dry in ˝ Hour due to the fact that you watched a Half Movie for 1 hour earlier!!!

A movie which you perhaps already own on DVD, can now be enjoyed on your PSP, with its large screen (running at half its potential of course) streaming off the UMD (to destroy the battery life further) which you had to $$$ purchase $$$ again to enjoy it whenever you get the chance to sit stationary for more than 20 mins, but less than 4 hours incase you need a charger or power point!!!

I think not!!!

DS:The DS is an instant preorder for import or UK release. You know what you are getting. You know what the games look like and how long the battery lasts. You have seen the functionality of the stylus and the touch screen and how they are going to be used within certain titles and the possibilities of future development. We have seen videos of games, previews from hands on game journalists and its all good.

Perorder? Of course, why not!

PSP: To date i have only seen marketing adverts, a few grainny kiosk videos and thats it. Spong have put up a few screens as well.

Preorder? Kiss my ass!

How can you put faith nevermind your reddies into something that no-one knows anything about except from tech specs. With the PSP coming out within a few weeks where the demo videos? Wheres the shows for hands on impressions? Wheres the marketing to sell this thing?

Poor, poor, poor!
