Civilisation IV confirmed - console versions in the offing?

Firaxis world history life-sapper returns

Posted by Staff
Firaxis CEO, Jeff Briggs, has recently confirmed that Civilisation IV for PC is in the works. It’s hardly unprecedented or surprising, but it’s good news nonetheless. Between the 3 previous instalments and their respective expansion packs, we have devoted a fair few hours, nay years, to this noble pursuit.

No further details have been offered up, but it would be reasonable to expect that the series will continue in the tradition of becoming even more complicated with each revision. Potentially, that will make Civilisation IV extremely complicated.

Perhaps the most interesting revelation is that Firaxis is warming to the idea of developing for consoles. The Civ series had always been intended for the PC market, with the exception of PSOne Civilisation 2 - which left rather an underwhelming impression, and it will be interesting to see if, and how, Civilisation IV might establish itself on PS2 or Xbox; or indeed the next generation of consoles.

In other Firaxis news, the team will also be working on a new Pirates game (Pirates 2, in case you were wondering) and another two titles besides. Whether one of these will be console specific remains to be seen. Mr. Briggs has promised more information in the new year, so expect an update then.

Like this series but haven't indulged in a while. Perhaps that's because of Age of Empires. Will look forward to it on a console.

Other new games too, Firaxis you've been very busy. Excellent news.

I definetly think the best console for a port would be the Nintendo DS. The DS interface just screams for this type of game.

Please, not on the consoles... it's not a console game dammit.

Here's hoping Meier's involved, otherwise we might get another travesty like Call To Power (which was eventually disowned from the Civ brand it was so bad!).

I'd have to agree with you there. These types of games are perfect for the DS. I just hope along with a possible Civilisation IV, we can also get EA to sort of some Commmand and Conquer love. Multiplay on these games is another great advantage.

We know Advance Wars DS is gonna come out, but it needs some competition. WE SOMEONE PLEASE PUT SOME MORE STRATEGY GAMES ON THE DS, PLEASE?

I think consoles are quite capable of handling this type of game now. For home consoles all you'd need in a possible keyboard or mouse to help things.

It's not like the PSone/N64 era anymore where consoles struggled to perform what the PC can do with ease. I'd reckon PS2, Xbox, PC and hopefully DS.

Oh yes, DS Red alert would indeed be something to shout about. Maybe even sell the DS to a lot of PC owners that might otherwise never look at a hand held as an option.

Come on EA, you kow you want to and I'm sure we are all up for it too.

Perhaps the Spong crew could find out if it's on the cards. It bloody criminal if it not. Wonder who will get out the DS first proper strategy (though we love Advance Wars series loads) game, EA or Cavedog?

Battle control terminated.
