GT4 slips again until 2005, still without online play!

The Polyphonic saga continues...

Posted by Staff
At the end of September, Sony made the announcement to hordes of disappointed fans that Gran Turismo 4 was going to be squeezed out before the end of the year, shedding online play in the process. Having already suffered from numerous delays, purportedly so that online options could be implemented effectively, this irked many loyal followers of the GT series.

Now it seems that the only positive angle to that news: that GT 4 was going to be released in 2004, has also evaporated. Gran Turismo 4 isn’t going to be online and it isn’t going to be released this year either.

Apparently, localisation for the PAL region proves particularly difficult because of the thirteen different languages involved. We don’t remember the GT series as being particularly text-heavy, but if that’s what it takes, we shall all have to wait until some point in Q1 2005.

Polyphony are still considering releasing an online enabled version later next year; but we won’t be holding our breath. If the date shifts again, we’ll let you know.

You know what, at this rate they might as well just shift the game to PS3. These delays and still no online option. Having to pay for the same game twice to get online ain't so sweet either.

Can understand the translation business though, I suppose if other euro nations learned english as a secondlanguage we'd get games much faster, and as the EU expands this is made more difficult. Something needs to be done about it.

Gaming is still in dire need of its own Star Trek style universal translator program to cut time.

Most other European people do use English as a second language, to the point that they use it as a common language for communicating with each other.

This is to say nothing of the proficiency that they have in English, nor the fact that they will switch into English, sometimes mid-sentence, when an English person enters the room.

The British really are the idiot cousins when it comes to languages in Europe.

Well that's bullshit. Surely it can't take more than a week of work to translate the bloody game into 12 languages... hell send it to me and I'll run it through Babelfish.

This is getting beyond a joke now. It was supposed to be here last christmas, then spring 04, then autumn 04, then christmas 04, then autumn 05, now chrismas 05. If it doesn't have some extra content for the wait - inclusion of Porsches, Ferraris etc should do the job - then just scrap it and move it to PS3.

Well, I reckon Sony might be misleading us all a little bit.

The PSP is still apparently on course for release this year, with the main problem being the lack of software. GT 4 mobile is the AAA title...

If GT4 was released on PS2 before the release of the PSP, that's one less reason to buy the handheld. So they delay it instead.

Surely it can't take several months for a multi-national corporation to translate the words 'wet weather tyre' and 'naturally aspirated engine'. Surely? Especially with that PSP translator device... http://spong.com/x?cid=1286

Yes, this is getting to be outrageous. If they're going to delay it again, at least put in the online play. Why should you need to pay for another game just to get the online component? Are they going to lower the price for the initial offline release since they're leaving a big part of the game out? (I wouldn't hold my breath)
The whole translation thing always seems to be a problem with the European games. Manuals have more pages than the bible and the game boxes have so many languages repeated on the back that there's hardly room for pics of the game.
Just put the damn thing in English and let everyone else deal with it. It will help them with their English classes in school. It may also bring the price of EU games more in line with prices in the U.S. and Japan with the savings generated by lower production costs.

Very poor indeed. Alot of people will be let down by this news. Ah well, there is plenty of AAA titles coming out before Chrimbo so you may be glad to have something new in the newyear.
