I'm kinda speechless and dribbling right now. Thank you Sega. Now show my GC some more love too.

I'm so inspired, I'm going to have my Dreamcast and Saturn set up next to each other to bathe in the warm, happy embrace that is playing Sega Rally.

PS2 Racing game = sprite farm

Im still surprised that its getting a PS2 release, i thought it would have been more logical to send it to the XBox. Hopefully however if it sells well we will see a multiformat release, doubtful though.

?

I think you might be confusing sprites for cardboard cutouts :)

Logical how?

PS2 still has the (vastly) larger user base. Logic prevails.

Whatever happened to the PS2 version of OutRun2?
I don't see a thing in that game that can't be done on PS2.

Outrun 2 is running on Xbox because it was running on Sega's Xbox-based arcade board (Chihiro). In order to get it onto Xbox, they've had to cut down on RAM usage as it is (the home system having half that of the arcade board). To convert it onto a machine with a fair amount of processing power missing would be too much.

Xbox is the logical choice because it is the easiest conversion.

Yes, this I'm fully aware of.

My point was that the game doesn't "do" so much that it couldn't be more than adequately realised on the PS2 - and gain access to a far larger market. The real power of the game is in the car "handling" and track design, not with super-mega draw distance, gazillion poly set-pieces and realistic physics. Content is easily portable, it's the engine that'd need to be reworked and, IMO, it's a pretty lightweight engine by many a game's standards.

That isn't to say OutRun2 is crap. It's great, and underlines that a great game doesn't need to have sim-like physics and miriad of power-ups and features to be top fun.

Indeed. Though if SEGA were to really take that tack, there's be no Live support or other extras.
