On the DS and hallucinogens – Naka gets arty

Sonic Team’s corruption at the hands of UGA continues apace

Those doubting the chances of Sega publishing ultra-stylised niche games for as-yet unproven platforms under the guidance of Sammy (us, mostly) will be eating their hats/words this morning as the latest title from Sonic Team, a DS exclusive, tugs our sky blue Sega heartstrings.

Carrying the title I Would Die For You, [not officially confirmed by Sega - expect clarification soon] the game revolves around a couple set in a delicious (and oh so Sega) swirling environment, performing tasks to help each other through the various stages. We have discerned that I Would Die For You uses only the touch panel for input, more intriguing still.

No official images have yet been released by Sega, with SOE unsurprisingly erecting a wall of silence around the project, though it would be fair to say at this point that this is perhaps the most interesting game from Sega, and perhaps on the DS period, to be seen this year.

Reports that the clouds of sweet-smelling smoke billowing forth from Sonic Team’s office following UGA’s arrival are directly accountable for the emergence of I Would Die For You could not be confirmed at time of press.*

Wow, that looks great. I'm a big fan of different graphical techniques (Rez and Jet Set Radio both being Sega titles to go down the lesser-walked path aesthetically), so this sits really well with me. The fact that Sega staff are being allowed to create the kind of innovative and quirky titles they built their reputation on is highly pleasing also.

Hopefully, the gameplay will impress too, and give me reason to believe that the DS is more than just a gimmicky device.

Yeah, I think, as they say, the proof's in the pudding. Looks fabulous, but will it play any good?

Anyway, the suggestion of a couple "performing tasks" makes me wonder what exactly we're to be controlling with that touchpad. LOL.

Well, when the codename "Project Rub" was announced, the Sonic Cult community did collectively think "H-Game", if you get what I'm saying...

That's not actually confirmed. Though it does have some sort of romantic aside. But anyway, so what? Space Channel 5 was just a music game, Donkey Konga is just a hitting things game with four inputs. This looks lie it has The Magic to me, the genre really doesn't matter.

Looks unusual, but so did Viewtiful Joe. This is one of those games that's hard to judge on screenshots. If it's from Sega, I have to keep my mind open to it's possiblities, til I know otherwise.
