Consoles have never been particularly welcoming hosts to the strategy genre, often disrupting gameplay concepts with their inadequate control mechanisms. Koei’s Kessen games have made two attempts to breach this divide, but despite solid production values, the titles have been far from flawless.

Kessen 3, which has just been confirmed for European release next summer, hopes to remedy the malnutrition of PS2 playing strategy fans. The newly evolved “group control engine” apparently lends the player a greater sense of control, with the ability to take direct charge of entire units, as well as just individual officers. As if that wasn’t more than enough to aid ‘Oda Nobunga’ in his plight to bring peace to Japan, Koei’s PR release fully explains that the army general is also “Blessed with an indomitable vision and fearless constitution…” so success is a foregone conclusion, surely?

As the Kessen games to date have been terrible, universally slammed, it does seem somewhat surprising that Koei is bothering with a fresh take on the series, which for your diarising needs, is due to hit the state of Europe in summer 2005.
