Munch’s Oddysee, due for release on PlayStation 2 sometime in 2001 is now set for an exclusive release on Microsoft’s XBox.
Oddworld was first conceived in 1994 by Lorne Lanning and Sherry McKenna, the founders of Oddworld Inhabitants. Three years after conception, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee was released to a curious crowd of gamers who had become acquired to the 3D technologies of PlayStation. The question mark behind the 2D nature of the game was soon lifted once players got hold of a copy, and played the game for what it was – a mind bending interactive experience. Using the developer’s trade marked A.L.I.V.E (Aware Lifeforms In Virtual Entertainment) feature, Oddworld had players using strategies not previously thought of. The Oddworld universe was born. With Abe’s Exoddus considered not to be a sequel, but an expansion of the original, the remaining four parts in the quintology were put back until they could be seen in their immersive 3D glory. News of Sony’s PlayStation successor gave Oddworld Inhabitants the chance to visualise their dream in reality on PlayStation 2. After a considerable length of development time, it became apparent to Oddworld founders Sherry and Lorne that XBox could realise their intentions better than any other entertainment platform to date. While Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee is no longer in development for PS2, the rest of the quintology has not been denied on Sony’s 128-bit powerhouse.
Oddworld publishers, Infogrames support Lorne’s decision to divert to XBox, as Matt Broughton, Head of Communications told us. “If Lorne believes XBox to be the machine to do Munch's Oddysee justice - you can bet your life savings it will be awesome.” Infogrames will continue to publish the Oddworld series as planned, and upcoming PS2 owners can only hope for later appearances of the much-loved character, Abe.
