There are plenty - perhaps too many - anti-terrorist squad-type games out there. It’s the kind of slightly tactical, justifiably violent, gadget and weapon-centric thing that appeals to many players. However, often the stories behind these relate to some spurious notion of alternate political realities, and unlikely-sounding ‘splinter cell’ operations.
Konami and Kuju Entertainment’s take on the anti-terrorist script is more matter-of-fact. Titled The Regiment, it puts players in direct control of an SAS unit. As everyone knows, the SAS are hardcore and incredibly menacing by most measures. And because The Regiment recreates incidents from the fairly recent past, it could seem all the grittier for it. Back in the 80’s it was less about computer technology and more about just being scary with a mask and a machine gun.
One such event, the siege of the Iranian Embassy in 1980 (or Operation Nimrod, to those in the know) is to be included as a mission in The Regiment. Those concerned about historical inaccuracies and artistic distortion should find solace in the fact that John MacAleese, a SAS member involved in Operation Nimrod, has been involved in the development process, and even dictates the game’s video mission briefings. For extra authenticity, SAS instructor Rhett Butler has also had an input to the game’s design.
The Regiment is due for release next year on PC and PS2 when, hopefully, it will provide ample rewards for UK developer Kuju.
