Eyetoy's Technical Capabilities Boosted as Play 2 is Revealed
Since the release of the Eyetoy last summer, there have been a fair few announcements regarding new games that make use of the camera peripheral. Alongside Sega Superstars, Anti-Grav and Jackie Chan Adventures, Sony will also be releasing a follow up to the first Eyetoy game, Eyetoy: Play 2.

Up until today, the precise contents of Play 2 were anyone’s guess. However, a few more details have now been unearthed, mostly pertaining to the enhanced technological abilities of the camera itself. Most importantly, the camera will now be able to track full motions and thus record the speed of certain actions. So when it comes to events such as the boxing mini-game, the Eyetoy will be able to measure how hard the player punches.

Other innovations include the ‘colour cam’ which allows players to use brightly coloured objects as controllers, ‘cutout cam’ which can superimpose the player over a variety of backdrops, and ‘Spytoy’ which commands the Eyetoy to switch on and record any motion it senses. The latter shall prove invaluable in the ongoing struggle to discover what particular critter keeps breaking into this particular writer’s domicile and nibbling on self’s tasty Dreamcast controller cables.

There are set to be 12 main events in Play 2, including Kung 2, Boxing, DIY, Mr Chef, Table Tennis and Home Run. For the most part, these will be exactly what their names suggest. In addition, there will be over 80 extra mini bonus games and a brand new four player mode.

All in all, Play 2 sounds rather promising and should get plenty of people in a flap (d’you see what we did there?) when it’s released this winter.

Am I the only one who finds more enjoyment out of watching people wail their arms around as opposed to actually doing it myself?

Nope. I volunteered to "perform" for some of the SPOnG screen grabs. What a complete t**t I looked, flailing and flapping like a fool.

I think office femme Kathryn does a much better job of it, footy kit and all. LOL
