Majesco fires up Shin'en's Nanostray for early 2005 release
Shin'en Multimedia has today revealed the first snippets of information regarding its current Nintendo DS project - Nanostray. In similar vein to Shin'en’s more-than-acceptable Iridion, this new venture will take the form of a classic shoot-em-up. As the only game in the genre yet announced for the DS, it could well prove popular when it’s released.

Nanostray will support 2-player games wirelessly, as well as an internet high-score chart for those keen to boast of their blasting prowess. Set over 10 levels, the 3D styled gameplay looks set to reflect what one would expect from a typical shoot-em-up. However, there hasn’t been any news on how Shin'en is making use of the DS’s unique features. A sensible guess would be that the touch-sensitive screen will be used entirely as a control panel - a 360 degree field of firepower could be easily handled with swift flicks and taps of the stylus. However, with little solid information available at this point, we can only speculate.

Majesco will be publishing Nanostray and delivering it for release early in 2005. If any more gameplay details come to light before then, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.

It's not the only announced shooter for the DS, Cerulean Dreams from Mezco Studios (www.mezcostudios.com) has been going for a while, though not wholly pure shoot-em-up as it featuers some RPG aspects.

True... but Cerulean Dreams doesn't have a publisher or a even a vague release date yet.

I'm a bit wary about Cerulean Dreams anyway. It was supposed to be a GBA game, and then it suddenly switched to DS. I think maybe the 'RPG element' only came about when Mezco spotted they had a whole other screen to fill...

Like the look of Nanostray, it's been a while since I've sat down with a mindlessly fun shoot em up, not since the Metal Slug series. Nice to see this kind of stuff on DS. This is also the first I've heard of Cerelean Dreams, and will also look forward to that too.

I still think everyone is expecting every game to use the touch screen, but that's like asking every game to use all buttons provided on the DS, not really necessary. Games that need that type of touch input will use it, but not every game will. The contest is open to see who can provide the most interesting uses of the DS features, and it's gonna get a whole lot more interesting in the future. At the moment Caduceus seems to be the most original DS title using the new features. Time will tell on the rest.
