Scarface to challenge the godfather of crime sims
It was bound to happen sooner or later - Scarface is being made into a game. As one of the finest gangster movies ever made, in a climate where every gamer wants to be a gangster, it makes complete sense. However, those canny folk up at Rockstar have already admitted to using Scarface as a primary source of inspiration in creating GTA Vice City. Subsequently, Scarface will have to be at least comparable to that to earn any respect... and respect is what it’s all about.

Vivendi Universal has grabbed the publishing rights, and Simpsons Hit and Run developer Radical Games will be working away on the nuts and bolts of the project. Unsurprisingly, Scarface will take the form of a third person action shooter, and given Radical’s last GTA style free-roaming environments, the title is heading towards the inevitable. From the mean streets of Miami to the yeo funded Florida Keys, this could be every bit the ‘fully licensed Vice City’.

If this didn’t have the Scarface name attached to it, it would be easy to criticise the idea as a cynical clone devoid of originality. However, Scarface is a legendary film, especially amongst the game-playing demographic, and we simply can’t help but get a bit excited. However, that also means that there’s ample scope for devastating disappointment, so we shall remain cautious until further details are revealed.

In other gangster gaming news, there has also been a rumour circulating that EA is soon to announce a game based on The Godfather movie. So alongside San Andreas, NARC and True Crime 2, wannabe wiseguys will soon get to sample games based on two of the best ganster movies ever made. All we need now is for Sega to anounce an arcade action blaster based on the original Get Carter.

More violent games to use as targets, the press are gonna love this.

The problem with this is it's now so easy to produce a violent adult game to pull people in, than it is to say produce something original and cleverly violent like Viewtiful Joe.

Are some developers and publishers taking the easy, quick buck way out at our expense? GTA was highly acclaimed and rightly so, but a few games on, it's surely almost all been done now. Or has it? Is it through lack of originality and creativity that western devcos end up here, at the door of action movie style games, and little else?

There has also been talk of japanese gamers apparently getting more violent due to my exposure to western films and games. Is this true I wonder?

Dude, you are so correct. I wish they'd lay off the violence aspect, and concentrate on the sex.

I mean, c'mon, "sex and violence", it just rolls off the tongue. The two go together like "salt and pepper", "pork and apple", "guns and roses", but we never even get any good sex in games, never mind sexual violence.
