Shenmue Online becomes a reality - First screens inside!

Sega's surprise MMORPG pictured within.

Posted by Staff
Although Sega has only just revealed the existence of Shenmue Online to a somewhat surprised fanbase, the Yu Suzuki MMORPG is rapidly gaining substance - and here’s the first raft of screenshots to prove it.

The first two Shenmue titles were notable for their impressive visuals, which showed off the under-recognised potential of the Dreamcast, and Shenmue Online should continue on this same nicely textured path. There is already an enormous amount of interest in this title, as it will serve to epitomise Sega’s new Asian PC-orientated business strategy whilst many Shenmue fans are still gawping at the very fact that Hazuki-san is going online at all.

Unfortunately, there’s still no mention of Shemue Online for the US or Europe, nor is there any news on the mythical Shenmue 3. Instead, here are some screens of a title you may never get the chance to play.

A vert ricky 1 this, as we all now that the Shenmue series had an amazing impact on the European gamers, and has 1 of the biggest fanbases yet. It does'nt really count us out 4rm getting it as im sure SEGA no for a fact that if the appeal is greater over sea's it wud b murder not to. They will see it go 4rm strength to strength. I hav seen tha video clip for this game at
www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo
make sure u watch it cos it will make ur eyes water in seeing 1 of the best CGI intro's in a long time.
My guess is that depending on there far eastern success, a U.S. n European release will follow as they would want to establish the Shenmue series 2 a whole new level of players. The story is remarkable 4rm wot ive read about it, being able to play new characters which look awesome. Check out dis link 4 more details.
Dis is every Shenmue fans fantasy, but soon can b there nightmare if it dnt happen over ere. I beg u SEGA plz!!!!!

Sega would have to be unbelievably stupid to constrict this game to a market which it was never the most successful in. The US and Europe where overall combined the most successful area for this game. Not launching it here would be financial sucide as I'm sure this game will have a similar development price tag as the original shenmue... oh and Shen-mue Hyruken! How unrealistic... tut tut...

I love Sega dearly, but that wouldn't be a first ; )

sega never released Shenmue 2 on the Dreamcast in the US...

As much as I'd like to think Shenmue Online will make it over here, I can see it not happening. By the time it gets localised (complete with oblivious mistranslations) there'll be alot of other juicy MMORPGs in the US and European markets (one of them being Sega's own Matrix Online), so it may never be worth it...

Well I think its likely to atleast make it to US after 6 months in Asia if it is a huge success in Asia (which it undoubtably will) and as soon as it hits US shores, we can let the imports role in thanks to PC gaming.

As for the screen shots. They look great but...am I the only one whos a bit puzzled to why Ryo and co are in them? This is a MMORPG after all...I think the raises questions in itself. Will this be an MMORPG in the normal everquest sense. Or a PSO style of thing, where you can pick 4 to whatever characters from the series and go through the game co-operatly? Or maybe thats just the cut scene leading you into the story. God knows. Its all very confusing and strange. We need more Info!!

That's exactly what I was thinking! Those don't look like MMORPG screens at all. I don't think SEGA has too much experience in that department either. Do you guys remember how they were going to work on the Matrix MMORPG? What ever happened to that?
