Sonic Mega Collection Plus expands with classic MegaDrive rarities

Comix Zone, Flicky, The Ooze and Ristar join the Sonic library.

The Sonic Mega Collection on Gamecube, in the eyes of long-standing Sonic fans, was almost as mega as could be hoped for. So when Sega confirmed the Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PS2, there were plenty of interested Cube-less gamers keen to bolster their game libraries with some comprehensive retro hedgehog delights.

However, this PS2 anthology, due out in the States in November, will take the collection to the next level. The "Plus" bit in the title apparently refers to a handful of non-Sonic games thrown in for good measure. What’s more, they’re all good Megadrive games that haven’t been re-released before, and arguably never received the recognition they deserved in the first place.

So, here’s the revised content list for Sonic Mega Collection Plus. For the price of a single game, it’s undeniably good value, especially for those of us that would have shelled out £40 and more for just one of these titles a decade ago.

Game Gear titles:
Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic Chaos
Sonic Drift
Sonic Labyrinth
Sonic Blast
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

Megadrive titles:
Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2 & 3
Sonic & Knuckles (including the lock-on variants)
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic Spinball
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

"Plus" Megadrive titles:
Comix Zone
Flicky
The Ooze
Ristar

If there are any changes for the PAL release, read it here first.

Lovely, Sega.

Now how about a Gamecube Plus++ version with titles such as Streets of Rage?

Pretty please?

I must admit that previously, if I'd wanted a blast on an old Sonic game, I probably would have just used an emulator... but SonicMega Plus looks totally worthwhile to me.

That's a shed load of Sonic stuff, all running smoothly and straight off the one disc, and the additional 4 games are the cherry on top. i loved Comix Zone, and have heard good things about Ristar...

C'mon SEGA, more high-value anthologies like this and you'll make collectors of even the most cheapskate emu-heads : )

Those Sega classics compliations on the dreamcast were OK-ish (apart from some dodgy porting) but it was hardly good value with only 4 or 5 titles... get it up to nearly 20 games, like this, and I'm definitely up for it.

I never played Streets of Rage 2 :(.

Back in the mid-1990s Sega really did produce some good one/two-off games.

Anyone remember Golden Axe? Had a poor GBA conversion recently...

How about Mega Games V with all the old Mega Drive classics? C'mon, you know you want it ;)...

Funny, Flicky and Ristar were the hidden titles in the Gamecube version.

Flicky was included due to influences in character design and the central gameplay aspect of Sonic 3D. I have no idea why they added Ristar, though I believe the prototype of Ristar (Feel) had a few similarities with Sonic in the looks department.
