Ubisoft has announced today that, in conjunction with MC2, it will be publishing a new survival horror title called Obscure for PS2, Xbox and PC. However, unlike City of the Dead, which was announced earlier today, Obscure will not be working with such close comparisons to genre stalwarts Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
Living up to its name, Obscure will take a fairly oblique angle on the word ‘horror’. Instead of influences from classic Romero-esque zombie-fests, and instead of working with genuinely frightening principles of psychological horror, Obscure is based on ‘teen horror movies’. You know the ones, those films that aren’t at all scary in any way, shape or form.
With a storyline more akin to Scooby Doo than The Exorcist, Obscure gives you control of five American high-school students setting out to investigate the ‘mysterious’ goings-on at Leafmore High. By videogame standards, however, the incorporation of a ‘mystery’ is hardly enough to elevate the product above its competitors. The main glimmers of hope therefore come mainly from the multi-player co-op modes and the squad-based control system, which could make the finished game something a little different.
We shall reserve judgement until the game is released this September. Expect more news then.
