When the majority of games seem to tread the same tired, tried and tested paths, truly original gaming concepts are all the more appreciable for their innovation. There’s nothing inherently wrong with knocking out FPS's and racing titles, as the quality of the Halos and Gran Turismos of this world attest; but as a result, gaming fanatics can get disproportionately excited about completely new ideas.
That’s certainly how we reacted to the new information on Warthog’s current projects, leaping at least three inches off the ground on reading the synopsis of the multi-platform Johnny Whatever, which “is based on a rebellious awakening in an Orwellian future England, when a new dawn of anarchy and chaos has arrived in the form of new age Punk Rockers who turned up and stuck two fingers up towards the old guard who has taken control of the future.”
As if the central inclusion of punk rockers in a bemani flavoured third-person shooting game wasn’t enough, the ultimate aim of the game is to rescue the Queen from a giant vat of mustard - presumably English and rather uncomfortable on the skin. To achieve this, hero Johnny Whatever must play out riffs on his nuclear-enhanced electric guitar, zapping robo-bobbies and goons around the streets of London town. Pure, unadulterated joy.
Elsewhere on Warthog’s roster is the amusingly named Sticky Balls [phnarr, phnarr etc], which is heading to PSP. This involves a purist approach to gaming and could well turn out to be more addictive than complimentary crack-laced tobacco. Imagine Marble Madness, crazy golf, pool, Super Monkey Ball and Katamari Damacy all hurled into a cauldron, swished about a bit and then put onto a powerful handheld machine. It’s got to be a very good thing.
Sticky Balls has already proved massive as it wandered around Cyberspace on PC - perhaps this will become a Tetris for the PSP?
The third and final pellet of Warthog news relates to its third new original IP - Milo and The Rainbow Nasties. This is shaping up to be a fairly kid-centric title, although it still glows with originality. Milo and his pet chameleon have to restore colour to their world, defeating the Evil Hand of Darkness and rescuing Milo’s younger sister. It will, according to PR information, provide an experience akin to a ‘living colouring book’. Sounds more like Wizball to us...
Expect more news about these intriguing Warthog titles as soon as it becomes available.
