2D fighter rethink canned at rumour stage

Capcom debunks Street Fighter 4 chatter
The endlessly entertaining imagination of GamerFeed has offered up as fact that development has commenced on Street Fighter 4, according to the site an unannounced 2D remake of the classic fighting series.

Our interest baited thoroughly, we contacted Capcom this morning for clarification. “We do have various games, as announced, in the 2D fighting genre right now. As far as there being Street Fighter 4 in development – I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous,” a representative told us.

So that’s that.

Street Fighter 4? Don't be silly! It'll be called Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Ultimate p***-taking franchise Edition!

Doesn't anyone remember that last year Capcom stated that another iteration of SF2 was in the works? Not counting the re-release on PS2, there is still yet another SF2 which will use the same artwork, music and gameplay on the way.

Forget your Tekkens, Soul Caliburs or Virtua Fighters. It's always been about the old-school Street Fighter 2.

And you believe them do you? Take it with a pinch of salt. I'd welcome another good SF game. There is so much pressure on Capcom to go into full 3D fighting games, but I don't know if SF would work properly in 3d.

I have SFEX and though a laugh it doesn't cut the mustard next to the 2d version, so I say bring it on Capcom.

Interesting how spong doesn't mention the GamerFeed article was in something called a "Rumormill"... see, unlike spong, we don't like reporting rumors as... you know... news.

Also, it always makes me giddy when Capcom representatives are unnamed. Your Ryu doll just doesn't count. ;-)

I think the piece refers to the fact that this isn't a rumour. It perhaps refers to the belief that this was pure imagination. It may also reflect that any serious site, with even one serious journalist, would have a contact at Capcom who will respond, on the record, ala SPOnG.

This is a fair point. The representative mentioned is Sam Brace from Capcom. Perhaps you could use his name as your inaugural games industry contact? Be my guest.

Then you misread. No worries.

Also, while Sam's professionalism (and Capcom Europe's knowledge) sure is tempting, we'll stick with the contacts at Capcom Japan and USA and leave it at that 'til 2006.

Unfortunately, my first day as a reader of spong is also my last. While we've referenced (and linked) spong in the past for your stories (correctly labeling them as rumors), I don't think we'll be doing that any longer for our audiences at Yahoo!, Lycos, Gamers.com, WWE, Xbox.com, and dozens more...

I mean, we're still waiting for that Nintendo & Microsoft partnership you so proudly trumpeted, and I'm just not itching to post about Kirsten Dunst's breasts. Good luck with your serious journalism, folks, and feel free to reply to the professional email I sent off earlier in the day. I fear you won't be getting any more page views from me.

OK, so explain how you've referenced our stories before, If you've never been to our site before?

But, interestingly, never bothered to do either when you take them as fact.

So, you aren't interested in breasts. That's your choice!

>I fear you won't be getting any more page views

You started by saying we'd never had any before. You only came to look at the story we ran refuting your SF4 story. So what's our loss, exactly?

No, nothing misread. The speculation reported was pure fantasy – as you well know.

Aside from industry contact top trumps being the most childish game imaginable, it’s also a game you’d loose. This also begs the question, why didn’t you use any of your contacts in Japan and the US to make an attempt to get the story verified? I would venture that. A. You don’t have these contacts. B. You made the rumour up. An explanation would be read with great interest.

If you want this thread to escalate into a series of examples us being ripped without credit by you, that’s fine. You might end up looking rather stupid, and very wrong though…

Read this: http://www.xboxworld.com.au/news/leading.php?idNews=436.

Then read the original story: http://news.spong.com/x?art=5053

Then perhaps you can suck our cocks? Up to you...

We'll be launching a gay interest section soon. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks. Good luck with your world-beating plagiarism drive.

You are so cruel.

I normally don't post from work, I'd get killed if anybody saw me, but I had to risk it for this!

"Contrary to popular belief, development has just begun on the title"

"Very little info is known about the new title, other than the fact that it will remain 2D."

Nowhere in that section is mentioned "this is a rumour"! Other sections in the story correct rumours, thsi section presents facts.

>I'm just not itching to post about Kirsten Dunst's
> breasts.

Strange, I would love more to be posted about Kirsten Dunst, and her breasts!

Nope. Your writer took part of SPOnG's exclusive MS/ATI deal article and pushed the two paragraphs about MS/Ninty as the main thrust. Hell, those two paragraphs didn't even mention a partnership, affiliation, merger or alliance - they just threw out details of the current relationship and let the reader make of it what they will.

Your writer, your site filled in the blanks and did the trumpeting.

> Unfortunately, my first day as a reader of spong
> is also my last.

It's hardly your first visit. A quick back-track through the server logs reveal a visit from your IP on 24 June. The Xbox 2 leak article, I believe. Oh, and again on the 30 June for the Driv3r "review code for scores scandal" story.

Furthermore, your writers visit regularly. For example, in a story about the E-reader not being launched in Europe, your writer used a quote from Nintendo's Shelly Pearce - exclusively given to SPOnG.

Why am I writing this? After all, you, John, won't be coming back to read it.

Well, I think you will. Our logs show you came back at 20:00 BST yesterday and again today at 01:00 BST - to read this thread.

You just couldn't keep yourself from wanting to read what people thought of your post, couldya?

To say you've never visited and won't visit again is more than a touch disingenuous, no?

I despise SF. In fact, these days, I despise all BEUs

Once was a time when I loved 'em (up?), but now they're all so tedious.

Actually it was I who posted the first thread reply on the Kirsten Dunst story, and I don't work for Spong.

I see nothing wrong with it sense it is related to games. Her complaint could have easily delayed the Spiderman 2 game had it not gone out on sale so early.

I feel no shame in posting about Ms Dunst, because I'm a fan of the girls. I just think her reaction was a little petty, since it's not like magazines don't dress up pics of her with Photoshop all the time.

As for SF4 news, no journo likes to be wrong but as a gamer I reckon SF4 is inevitable, since it has a lot of fans. It's also refreshing in this 3D dominant age that Capcom can still show the love to good 2D gaming. Just because reps don't whisper it doesn't mean it won't happen.
