First Sighting of Ren-Goku for PSP - Screens Inside!

Hudson’s Tower Of Purgatory revealed.

Posted by Staff
Ren-Goku: Tower Of Purgatory was one of the first totally new IP's confirmed for the PSP. Hudson has now revealed screenshots of its handheld third-person action game, and they look rather promising. In terms of visual style and gameplay content, Ren-Goku resembles similar titles already on the market, Shinobi and Otogi springing instantly to mind.

With characters designed by acclaimed Japanese artist Suemi Jun, and plenty of 3DCG scenes, Tower Of Purgatory could provide the ideal opportunity to show off the PSP’s graphical potential.

The premise of the game is straightforward enough, mainly involving the blasting and bashing of all and sundry. The principal twist, lending an RPG angle to proceedings, is that the main character’s limbs can be replaced with a variety of offensive weaponry. When both arms are replaced by a massive spike and a massive hammer, it’s easy to imagine the kind of carnage that will inevitably ensue.

Expect plenty more PSP game news as other early projects begin to take shape over the coming months.

I dunno, looks okay to me. The texture qualtiy is pretty poor in those shots though. Hardly the PS2 quality graphics they have been shouting about.

How old are you, 11? Stop the system name calling, that's for immature crybabies who choose sides when it comes to playing games.

for gods sake, why do people get so touchy, its a piece of plastic....

im 17 btw, and i know what im saying, did i ever say the games were to be crappy? no. i didn't. i said the DS itself was, for a few reasons, its ugly, it has a smaller screen, the duel screen design has been done before, nintendo game and watch.

So many people on here don't like the PSP, and i have no idea why, its so much better in everyway, except it doesn't have nintendo games or 2 screens.

I'm calling you out for jumping the gun. If looks are all that matters to you (apparently it seems so, graphics, system design, etc.) then maybe the PSP is right up your alley. Why don't you reserve your judgement and try out both systems when they come out before giving us your opinion?

The thing about PSP and DS is this. DS no matter how it looks will sell for a reasonable price, like previous Nintendo GB handhelds. All GBAs so far have been about 90 pounds or so. With the DS I can see it retailing for about 100-160, remember even though it has two screens, it has NO movings parts. As for the DS design it's clearly retro futuristic, a piece of past(Game and Watch) present 2D games(GBASP) and future 3D DS games all wrapped in a GBASP clam shell design. Do also bare in mind the DS design we all saw WAS NOT FINALISED, and MAY CHANGE before release.

The PSP is going to be expensive, no doubt about it. It uses UMD as media which can be used double or single sided, and as sweet as that all sounds think about the price of what you will be buying. The games are gonna be pricey as is the machine itself, and this isn't a home system you'll be buying. So far under Nintendo handheld prices have been reasonable, though I can see PSP changing this and maybe coming in at 200-300. These are part of the problems with it even though it's sexy and all. As I've said several times I intend to buy both anyway, but I'm trying to speaking from an objective perspective. As for movies I'd rather watch my own stuff than buy Spiderman 2 for my DVD player, and then a PSP version. Makes no sense to put films on it if you can't watch what you want, instead of what they say you can.

One of the reasons why the japanese market is in decline is because of how complex games have become, Sony has played a vital part in this since they are in the lead on their home turf. The console transition from 2D - 3D happened so fast that many people who used to play back on NES/SNES/MD have stopped playing games, apart from GBA though, because 2D games are a lot easier, this is the reason it's still shifting by the truckload even today in Japan, shifting even more than old Xbox weekly. I think with the DS, Nintendo are looking to keep those previous GBASP customers, and those who have avoided games since back in the day, while giving them something different they haven't experienced before. Therefore DS has the potential to suck up the forgotten gamers out there, and fixing the problem. The recent cheap Famicom series re-releases also point in this direction of simple games.

As for this game Ren-Goku it looks good for PSP, but I know where my money is going first. To the best priced, and best games of the two. A games industry without Nintendo will go nowhere fast, so I really don't see them losing this one after messing up twice already. They know that if they don't learn from their mistakes they could either end up like Sega, or join the rest of japan's unemployed. Failure isn't an option anymore.

Lastly notice that PSP has now been delayed in the U.S, and also Japan strangely, but no price tag or estimate for the system has been released yet. It's due to be at ECTS in September, so people will want to know soon. Lesson number one in hand helds is the prices, if they get em wrong they are gonna have problems. MS learned this the hard way with Xbox (though not a handheld), and are still losing cash today.

We don't hate Sony, we just need a new king to take us somewhere new. I criticise and praise all who deserve it, including Nintendo, even though I like Nintendo's stuff. Sony showed some vision with the PS. They now aren't sure where to go next apart from better tech, and that's not always the answer, both hardware and software must be good.

Well written Joji.

I agree with alot of your points and recently i commend Nintendo for at least trying to produce something new and interesting. I like the sound of the PSP but at the end of the day its a portable PSX lets face it and the handheld market is run by 6-15 year olds.

Would you let your child walk round with that?

Instant mugging!
