Winning Eleven 8 boxart

Slow news day? Why not run some big game cover?

Posted by Staff
As every games journalist knows, there’s nothing more appropriate on a really slow news day than the cover art to some big name game in the global pipeline. That is, if no new list of award nominees or winners is available. Which it isn’t, for today at least.

So here we present the first look at the Japanese cover for the PlayStation 2 version of Winning Eleven 8, scheduled to be renamed to Pro Evolution Soccer 4 in Europe, when it launches in the autumn of this year.

So who's the suit on the box?

Only Football legend Zico who played for a world cup winning team Brazil a few years ago. Not sure what year exactly. He is now the Manager of the Japanese National team, probably why he's on the front cover of Winning Eleven 8 and probably won't be on the cover of Pro Evolution 4.

But is this box art bigger news than Spong actually say it is...I mean I don't see any 'Network play' Symbol on their...could that mean the PS2 version of the game isn't online? Intresting...

I've never heard of a major sports title that put a non-player on the cover before. You silly Europeans!

Um, Alan, that writing on the box doesn't look remotely like any European script I've ever seen.

:)

I think the guy on the packaging is a manager of a football/soccer team in Europe. The previous few version of PES also had world famous football people. WE6 had a japanese player on the front, WE7/ PES3 had Pierluigi Collina who a world famous football referee. The guy on the latest cover, I can't remember his name but I'm sure he's a well known manager.

Football is a world sport so most footy fans would know who he is anyway, especially in japan.
