New screenshots from Final Fantasy XII

Square Enix’s seminal RPG looking good. Fresh shots inside.

Whilst Square Enix contemplates whether or not to produce a brand new Final Fantasy game for Xbox 2, in the here and now, a bevy of screenshots from the upcoming Final Fantasy XII on PS2 has been revealed. Graphically speaking, FFXII does look like it will turn a few heads, particularly with the glorious CGI cut-scenes that have become synonymous with recent FF titles.

When Final Fantasy XII is finally released it is almost guaranteed to sell in vast quantities, particularly in Japan, and should kick off Square Enix’s 2005 financial year in a mightily profitable fashion. Sales in US and Europe won’t be too shabby either, although release dates for these regions have yet to be confirmed.

FFXII is due out in Japan at the end of the year, or possibly early 2005. In the meantime, here are the latest screens for inspection.

Looks great as usual. Would be nice to see Square-Enix exspand the series onto other systems. Exspecially Xbox 2. It would allow them to try new things, just like Cyristal Chonicles. Even though that wasn't an overwhelming sucess, it was a welcome change and I'd be interested to see what they could do with their most prized franchise on the Xbox. Specially looking at the shape most RPG's are taking on the Xbox, KotOR, Jade Empire and Fable all offer a huge amount of decision making and actually see consiquenses for your actions etc. If Square-Enix were to take some of there ideas on board with their own and put it on the Xbox under the Final Fantasy brand...they could be onto yet another winner.

It's unlikely that they'd take ideas from Fable etc but I suppose anything is possible. Japanese rpgs tend to sway towards having more than one characters to have more of a party (the Suikoden series is the best example of this). FFXII looks great and most likely will be better. FF on Xbox would please a lot of people, but Square seem reluctant to spread the love to all formats. Perhaps it could work out, after all it did for Sega, and each sytem had something different.

Sometimes I feel Square concentrate too much on FF series, when they have so much more other stuff in their in the back catalogue, along with ex-Enix stuff. They are using Front Mission series again but apart from that it's pretty low key. Where's the other stuff? I know there's Dragon Quest VIII, but then what?

I believe FFCC was outsourced by Square for GC. It went done well, but rested too much on the multiplayer biz. There's supposed to be another FF game on the way to GC, but I hope they focus more on the single player game this time.
