UK Charts see Driv3r jump the gun

Sales figures tell of naughty retailers. Sam gives Harry the good news.

This week's ELSPA/ChartTrack UK All Formats chart indicates activity that always results in a good argument - possibly even a cat fight. No, it's not the fact Ubisoft's PS2 fuelled Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow has knocked EA's mighty Potter from the top spot, though that is a noteworthy event. It's the fact that Atari's great summer blockbuster has achieved only a number six placing. Amazing news, particularly when one considers that the title is actually due for release this coming Friday. The big question now will be which of the retailers have been selling the title ahead of Atari's official release date. Pick up this Friday's MCV for the inevitable mud slinging - it's handbags at ten paces in the letters page.

UEFA Euro 2004 Portugal does a spot of fancy footwork and gets one up on Red Dead Revolver, with the two swapping third and fourth place. Activision's Shrek 2 looks to be a less than stellar launch with the title entering at number five. It's worth pointing out that the movie hasn't even opened in the UK, so its true performance will been demonstrated in the coming weeks.

Eidos's Thief: Deadly Shadows hangs in at eight, slipping just one place from its debut position - good news for the beleaguered publisher. Right behind the stealth 'em up is Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 3, another Euro 2004 powered title.

Lastly, GameCube exclusive Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour achieves a relatively impressive debut placing at number 10.

Elsewhere we see Atari's Shadow Ops: Red Mercury making ripples on Xbox as it enters at number 28. Poor thing - it was probably neglected by the PR folks in the clamour to shove Driv3r down everyone's necks. Bad news for SEGA's Sonic Advance 3, which debuts at the rather comical 39.

Next week expect the real Driv3r figures, as the respectable retailers do the right thing a start shifting boxes this Friday.

Obviously Atari should have featured a mode that included playing football somewhere in the game.

Well the main reason Shadow Ops hasen't sold well is because like Driv3r is isn't supposed to be out until this Friday. Or so I think. I swear theres been a mix up with the release date. For a long time (until a week before the release) its supposed to come out the 18th June. This was changed to the 24th June. And Play.com (where I ordered it from) still don't have it. Hell the only shop that is selling it in my area is Game! Hence why I don't have it yet.

And Game and Gamestation have been selling Driv3r since Friday.

Too me, if anyone should be lynched for the early release of games, it should Game, who have brought out Shadow Ops and Driv3r a week early before everyone else. Not that I'm complaining or anything :)

It's Game.

They have it decked all over the front of their shop, on sale now! None of that crap where they have a game everywhere, but when you get to the counter you realise that the price card is a pre-order card.

That makes me want to kill their kittens.
