According to reports surfacing today, Namco will employ new hardware when it releases the arcade version of the hotly anticipated 3D battler Tekken 5.
It has been suggested that an upgraded version of the PlayStation 2-based System 246 board - dubbed System 258 - will be released with the game, which we are led to believe will incorporate more RAM and VRAM than the sturdy original.
Namco’s recent involvement in the arcade scene has been rather interesting to say the least. As one sector analyst pointed out to us today, “Namco is a rather dark horse at present. It’s worth remembering that it is part of the TriForce partnership, though nothing has yet been seen for the platform.”
As to why Namco involved itself with TriForce has yet to be seen, though the possible emergence of new PlayStation 2-based coin-operated technology makes the roll-out of Tekken 5 that little bit more interesting.
